Hosta Fluted fountain and Komodo dragon

Chris still has a hosta and a fern that I am going to order. Usually, it doesn't cost much more to add another plant or two. I'm considering either Fluted fountain or Komodo Dragon. Fluted Fountain looks gorgeous in the HL photos, but it's not real common and I have no experience with Don Dean plants (learned the hard way that Olga Petryszen hosta don't do real well in pots in Texas). Both of the above have Donahue's Piecrust in their genealogy. The only experience I have had with Seaver plants was Humpback Whale, which seemed to be doing well before it got the killing root rot and Queen of the Seas, which never really took off before it got the root rot.

Any experience with either?

Bkay2000—-I have no experience but I personally love the color, upright shape and leaf wave better on Komodo Dragon than on FF, which is also a good looking hosta. Size may help with making the decision. HL says KD grows to 72x28. That needs a lot of space! Good luck!

Many hostas will take a lot of sun if they get plenty of water. Solid blues will quickly turn green or dark green, as will the blue parts of blue variegated hostas. Some of the large hostas that do well for me are: Blue Angel Green Angel Golden Sculpture Montana Aureomarginata Sun Power Sagae Green Piecrust--huge and striking then mature Grey Piecrust--ditto Abba Dabba Do T Rex Choo Choo Train Journey's End Guardian Angel American Icon Atlantis Blue Mammoth Blue Umbrellas Earth Angel Komodo Dragon Moonlight Sonata Parhelion--my favorite of the Sum and Substance offspring Paradise Power Sea Lotus Leaf Sum It Up Sum of All Sunshine Glory Titanic Great Expectations--my favorite hosta Green Sheen Green Velveteen Frosted Jade--immense, and it will take full sun Dab A Green There are lots of other very large to giant hostas, but all the plants on this list are good growers, fairly easy to find, reasonably priced, and very hardy. I plan to add a number of new giants to my garden this year as well, all of which are said to grow well. These include Jurassic Park, Empress Wu, and Sutter's Mill.

YO! Abba Dabba Doo (thanks to hostahillbilly's pics) - besides the pics, believe us, this cultivar is probably the fastest grower here, even in heavy shade. Do yourself and it a big favor and bury a soaker seeping hose around it. I'm pretty sure it is impossible to overwater it. When it does get a lot of water it really 'stands up' in the traditional 'vase-shaped' form, pretty! Whirlwind - My wife teases the heck outa me every time we go on a hosta run because I always exclaim, 'Hey, Hon, lookie here!' when I come across this cultivar. Even though it's not a BIG one or a fast grower, it must be one of the ones that qualify for the 'ten yard' rule, or however that goes. Anyway, it is distinct, and everyone should have one, sorta like H. 'June', eh? hh

I look at my pitiful plants which are dwarfed in pots, and think Pfffffhhhh, no problem ..... ....and then Don posts that ginormous Key West, which is fantastic and it dwarfs Miz Olga! I cannot WAIT for something in my garden to look like that. Hosta are just about too exciting for me ole heart. I've taken steps to give Empress Wu room, and S&S as well. I had no idea about Key West though. It looks innocent enough in its normal nursery pot. Olga sure can breed giant hosta!

Of the two I have KD so no experience with FF and no experience with growing hostas in pots like you have. In the HL they look to be very similar. KD does get to be very big, but if you had Queen of the Seas in a pot then you've got experience with big ones in pots. I really like the pie crust edge and the deep ridges of Komodo Dragon....

They don't get that big here in the ground or in pots. Generally speaking, they get 50 to 60 percent of the advertised size. My old stand-by, So Sweet gets about 14" high and about 30" wide but the advertised height is 22". The advertised leaves are 5X7, but mine are 3X6. I've had one of these So Sweets for about 10 years, so they are fully mature. I just went out to measure Krossa Regal, it's leaves are 4X8, the advertised size is 7X11.

I just looked up the two on myhostas.be and hostaregistrar.org. According to the hostaregistrar, they are similar in size, with KD being slightly taller. FF is not detailed on myhostas.be. So, while I was at it, I looked up Blue Angel and Sum and Substance, which I've had. They both did fine (except BA is subject to anthracnose), so the size does not deter me.

Using the comparison tool on the HL, I think I like KD better.

I don’t have Fluted Fountain but have Komodo Dragon. It is stunning, I don’t think you would be disappointed!

No experience with FF but I have had KD for about six years. In the ground first, then potted it up and up potted it to a half whiskey barrel two years ago. Very happy with it but am concerned for when I have to replace the potting media, don't know if my old back can handle tipping it and getting it out.
