Porches & Decks Windows Design Dilemma

Windows and porch

I’m redoing the porch and front of my house... shutters, post, windows. I’m doing the ceiling in the porch stained wood and are looking for ideas on shutter, post and window colors?? I was thinking of doing a darker window frame , maybe Pellas iron ore. Or should I leave it the same.

Just my opinion, but this seems much too complicated for normal residential construction. Quality double-hung windows have been in existance for hundreds for years and modern double-hungs, double glazed and properly caulked and sealed are very efficient. The operative word is "quality"! If divided lights are desired, there's a range of options, depending on aesthetics and budget. Farmhouse type houses typically use double-hungs. All of these other types of windows sound much more expensive to me for no apparent additional value. Porch windows don't need to be tilted out or turned or some other type of access for normal use or for cleaning--they are on a porch, with easy access to both the inside and outside, right? If this were my house, it would be double-hungs--end of story! Good luck with your project!

Acrylic Windows on porch - should you air condition the space

peabody1, If you are planning on closing up the one wall to totally enclose the porch to make it living space and leave open the sliding doors to allow A/C to go into the room, acrylic is a mistake. The heat will radiate right to the inside and your A/C will probably work overtime. More electricity. I am curious what the other walls are? Knee wall with windows above. If so, what kind of windows. What are the dimensions of the room? What do you plan on using it for? More info on the existing construction and which way the porch is facing? Is it in the sun all day? What about the roof? Lindsay offers the Earthwise window which is pretty solid. I'd probably prefer it over the others that you have listed. How is this room used? IE, is it conditioned year round, do you run AC in summer, etc. The reason that I ask is the 366 glass is not the best choice for most climates other than those that are hot and sunny. That said, if you do not heat the room during winter and you do cool it in summer, it would be a good choice. Alternatively, if you do heat it, you are better off with a 272 which I'm sure that they offer, if not even a 180 in the event that you typically keep the room "open-air" during the summer months. The reasoning behind my recommendation is that those glass packages will offer major variances in solar heat gain, so you should really customize that choice to how you use the room.

Lizzie, This is the more specific window and door forum. You won't get too much artistry out of this group of guys/gals. Probably better to post those pictures in the landscaping or decorators forums inside of GardenWeb.

White Trim and windows definitely. Beefier Columns, Shutters on all windows or none. Possibly brighter color, maybe blue or red front door and shutters. Everything you have there now is sort drab and monotone.

I would like a slightly off white trim with black shutters. Larger square columns. Paint the ceiling pale sky blue. It’s a beautiful home

Forgot to add...I would also consider removing the far left shrub in front of porch and widen steps to make your entry more important. It seems a bit hidden.

I would consider staying with lighter colored windows. The porch puts the front wall and windows in shadow. I'm afraid if you go with dark windows they may appear as dark holes. There's something a little off about your porch. Took me a minute but realized there doesn't appear to be real beam that spans from column to column. Columns hold up beams and the beams hold up the roof. If you have the height to add a beam, then beefier columns would seem appropriate. It's a lovely house by the way. Good luck!
