Help with living room decor

Hello! I need help decorating my living room. I’ve been told by a friend who is much better at design that I have too many dark pieces. the couches are here to stay (love em bc they are cozy and power recline!) but I’m open to replacing anything else. Please help!

A lighter-colored rug would do wonders.

What color/pattern would work best with a modern theme? It’s hard to tell from the photo but we have a glass top coffee table. And our view is of the ocean, so we really liked the thought of incorporating blues. Guess the rug was too much? thanks Elaine :)

I would start out with a large, beautiful rug in warm colors (terracotta or red Oriental rug mixed with other colors. I feel sectionals often confine you in how to organize your room. I would choose a fabric couch in a neutral, not too dark color (not gray, which is on its way out and not a warm color), and add two chairs in a different color or at least a different material and style. Try to keep the height of these pieces similar. Two end tables in wood (they don't have to be the same, but make sure the heights are fairly similar and a metal and glass coffee table would look great, with table lamps or floor lamps even if you have overhead lighting, which is always harsh. Pick colors from the rug for pillows and you'll have a beautifully coordinated living space. Books, good paintings and some tall plants will add warmth and personality to your room. People too often don't add these elements and then wonder why their rooms look bare and cold. This may be more colorful than you want to go. and this is a small rug because there is carpeting underneath, but it gives you the idea of neutral furniture and how it can be made more lively with accessories, pillows, coffee table styling etc.

Hi, I need help with this. I’m looking for something to go next to the mirrors or maybe make adjustments to the table decor? It’s off scale I know. I tend to be very symmetrical and my gut says to put sconces on both sides of mirror but any other ideas?! It’s cozy little living room, not very big, that wall is close to the patio door. Hi Seong. What a nice space! You’ve got a blank slate to work with, which is fun. If it were my room ... leave three or four feet open by the window. You might place a chair there for a reading nook. place the tv on the staircase wall. place a bookcase directly opposite the TV. have two matching sofas facing each other, one facing away from the window, one facing toward it. Coffee table between. The sofa lengths need to leave at least three feet of walking space from the front door to the kitchen. The length should also not overlap the bookcase opposite the TV, or be at least six inches from the wall. Have a buffet with lamps behind the sofa toward the dining area. (It needs to be shorter than the sofa. Also, don’t exceed the sofa length.) Leave the wall in the dining area free for a huge piece of art. Your house can handle a lot of different styles, contemporary to traditional. So go with what appeals to you. Ivory or blue (I assume you mean a medium to light blue) would both be nice. An ivory rug will show more dirt. At least that encourages more frequent cleaning! Measure everything twice at the store and lay it out on your floor with newspaper before you buy anything! TV looks too high to me also. Corner iron piece detracts from nice fireplace. What’s the outlet high up on right for? What is the console looking piece behind black chair? I like your furniture pieces & rug together & looks like a really nice room. Thought of painting that fireplace makes me cringe! I think it’s pretty & adds nice texture to room. I’m not a member of the “let’s paint all the stone group”. I can’t offer any suggestions about your shelves or coffee table choice without seeing more of room from different angles. I do agree that walls either side of TV could use some interest but I keep coming back to TV. Too big for space & too high. My vote is to move it but can’t say where wo seeing more of room. Doing that might require some rearranging of seating too. I just think the fireplace would look so pretty with the TV moved.

Yes, the dark couches with the dark rug is too much. Put in top search box modern rug pattern color in photos and see all the ideas. One I liked was the rug with a white background and black diamond pattern. Another was a rug with off-white and green diamond pattern. Blues are fine - very calming. Also bring those colors into huge wall art and accessories such as a throw, pillows, lamp base, etc. Speaking of lighting, I might trade out that three light fixture number you have for the following: a table lamp or wall sconce in each corner at chest height. You may not have a modern look, but instead a casual look due to the couches. Educate yourself about the different decor styles by putting them one at a time in the top search box. Start off with modern, then casual, then eclectic, then transitional, etc.
