How to book to pronounce eng. and latin names
Comments (6)There are a number of websites that have audio files you can click on and hear the name pronounced and there are many books that include the phonetics either using symbols or sound-alike words. But (and there's always a but). The science of naming things is the study of Taxonomy and taxonomists don't pay much attention to the scientist over in the horticulture or zoological world. This is why names are constantly being disputed and changed. Gardeners, Horticulturists and many other very knowledgable folk tend not to pronounce things correctly - so even if you do, they will correct you to their way of saying things even if it flies in the face of "the Rules". Yes, there are rules. If the word is longer than three syllables then the third from the last syllable gets the emphasis. If the root of the word is latin you pronounce certain vowels one way, but another way if the root is Greek. Though we often call the scientific names "latin" there sure a lot of Greek words being used. Since this whole system of names was developed by Carolus Linnaeus way back in the olden days when monks in monastaries were the only people that could read or write and they mostly spoke latin - we are supposed to be pronouncing things the way the ancient church said them. But we don't. We are supposed to change the spelling on modern words that get used as a name so that they will be spelled in such a way so as to be pronounced the ancient church way - but we don't. Please, somebody show me anything 'johnson' in the ancient Italian church, but 'johnsonii' shows up often. To me there is nothing wrong with saying it your own special way - there is something wrong with adopting the attitude that you are right, and others are wrong. There are also rules that we call 'manners' which state that we shouldn't look down on other people, but people do that also. I try to include every possible pronunciation when I use a scientific name. You will also notice that I don't call it 'botanical latin' (kinda grates on my nerves) the system is used to classify all forms of life on this planet = animals, plants and bacteria. It is not only about plants. just my two cents. I've stood all day in the sun.......See MoreAAUW Book Sale in Arlington! Last Day Saturday!
Comments (1)I filled up a whole box & only managed to spend $10.25! Since it was half-price day, I got a small stack of Neil Sperry's Texas Gardening for 10 cents each, a couple of nice hardback books for 50 cents each, 1 hardback was $1 (the most expensive thing I got!), & some paperbacks for 25 cents each. They had a Collector's Room, with first editions, signed books, etc, & there was a table for videos/books on tape, etc. The other books were on tables arranged by subject: gardening (need I say that one was picked nearly clean by the time I showed up???) home improvement cooking/entertaining Texana history women's studies computer children's young readers Those are some that I can remember: there were at least twice that many subjects. I also filled out a card so they'll notify me for next year's sale, & I'll try to post it earlier....See MoreBook on tape suggestion?
Comments (6)I think just as important as the book you choose is the person who reads it. I have listened to some books on tape that were painful because the person reading the book was also acting out the parts and accents. I highly recommend Dick Estell. He has a website and public radio show called Radio Reader. He has been doing it for many years and has a huge collection. I am sure you will find something your friend will like from his past books....See MoreBooks on Tape
Comments (12)I can't exist without them, although years ago I thought they were worthless! I had always figured that it made no sense for me to listen to a book since I'm a pretty fast reader, and it would waste my time. (And thank goodness it's one of the few things that I haven't gotten considerably slower at!) But then i realised that I could go for power walks or prune bushes, weed, bake cookies, dust and run errands while reading! Or rather listening to a book. It's been wonderful. The biggest problem now is that BOT are going the way of vinyl. And books on CD are a pain, because you can't save your place, going between house and car or portable player. And they SKIP! So after much help from everyone here I'm going to be getting an MP# player to down load audio books from the library. Haven't gotten the nerve to actually do it, since that means having to learn a new device but I will do it soon. Here is a link that might be useful: Best player for audio books...See Moresleeperblues
