Drawers stick on F&P dish drawers

Both of our dish drawers have starting sticking recently and require a good tug to get them to open. They are over 10 years old. Does the seal just wear out or rot? Anything we can do to remedy this problem. I'm afraid I'm going to do damage to the door pulling on it.

You have two single-drawer units? Or one double-drawer unit?

"Over 10 years old" covers a lot of ground for the various model revisions. Citing the specific model number(s) is more helpful than an imprecise age reference.

Assuming you don't have one of the very early models that have inflatable seals ...

The seal (for each drawer) is part of the drawer lid and does not contact the drawer rim until a cycle is started and the lid motors crank the lid down.

The lid attaches to lid yokes at the left and right of each drawer, which in turn are connected to the screw-drive motors to raise and lower it.

Could be one (or both) of the yokes on both drawer have broken.

Could be one or both of the lid motors on both drawers have failed.

A drawer can be forcibly opened if the lid motors fail and the lid doesn't open ... but it cannot be closed again without damaging the seal ... the lid motors must first be manually cranked to raise the lid.

Could be the link support arm (which supports the wiring harness, fill hose, and drain hose) has broken on both drawers and something is dragging on the drawer ... but you didn't cite the model to confirm if you have the old-style plastic link support (which will eventually break) or the more-sturdy revised metal support.

There may be a few other possible causes.

DD24DCTB6. I was hoping the answer was generic enough I didn't have to go find the receipt. :-)

I read this to DH and he just feels that the gasket is dirty or sticky (says the electronic tech). When opening, after the seal is initially broken, it opens just like before if that helps.

When researching the F&P dishdrawers, one interesting comment that was made that really hit home for me was something along the lines of "if you are going to get dish drawers, why NOT get the ones made by the company that has been doing it the longest and has the benefit of its own research and improvements". So, I thought about that, and did some more research and learned that indeed F&P did have some issues earlier, but worked hard to improve and correct any problems. I bought the F&P dish drawers about a year ago and couldn't be happier. Just the other night they once again proved themselves to me: in the top drawer I put in a scraped of large chunks only dish that I made scalloped potatoes in and in the bottom were the baffles (greasy) from the range hood. Everything was sparkling when done.

The serviceman is correct. DishDrawers have always vented in the same way and same location since day 1 of their introduction in 1997. Smashing a cast-iron pan over his head will not change that fact. I have no idea why your condensation problem is suddenly happening. Not possible to diagnose that kind of situation from afar. One effective workaround is to press Power to cancel the cycle when the dry phase starts and pull the drawer fully open so the heat and moisture can freely waft upwards.

OOOh! That's new! I'd go with the 24"er though. The cabinetry issue. The replacement. Never buy the first year model as they say in the car business--especially when you can't replace it with another model because it's an odd size. The single 24" drawer should be plenty for day-to-day use, especially if you get a tall one. Every week or so have the spouse throw a roasting pan in the bottom drawer.

Hi erikanh, our kitchen in the "in progress" section of the fkb. DH is making some of our lighting fixtures and I refuse to call it done until they are up---so we've been at 95/98% for 3+ years (our cabinets were installed March-June 2005). Good thing we have classic cabinets. Otherwise the kitchen would probably be hopelessly out of date by the time I consider it "done". I think the FKB link brings you to my photobucket album which is not at all organized and often has multiple shots of one view---not really ready for prime time. layout and top wall: left side of top wall (toward eating area) and right side (toward mudroom) with baking center: Right wall: bottom wall: Left Wall from kitchen side and then back from dining room side (hutch doors are a pass through) The cabinet lines ended up looking squiggly when I shrunk the photos. Please be assured that our cabinets are really nice and straight : ) I know what it's like to fall in love with cabinetry. I first scoped out cabinets in a couple of local lumber yards in the early 90's. There was just one line of cabinet I really really liked and I put some literature in a folder. More than a decade passed and I checked out cabinets again in 2004. I was introduced to CP by a family member. I loved them and compared to some bathroom cabinets we had made by a cabinetmaker friend they seemed like a good value. After ordering the cabinets I found my old folder from 1991 and the cabinets I had loved then were CP! Obviously their sales method had changed (no longer in lumberyard kitchen showrooms) but my heart held steady without me knowing it. Lucky thing we waited so long because we're at a different point in our lives where we're willing to spend money on the infrastructure of a house we hope to still be living in in 40 years. Series 6 unit. It has (or should have) the updated link support. The model number is on a tag on the machine, visible between the drawers (usually at the left) when the upper is open. Not necessary to find the receipt.

The serial number is coded for the month and year of production if you want to know the age more accurately.

The seal should not be in contact with the drawer after the lid opens/raises at end of the cycle. The lid is raised with enough distance between the drawer and seal that it should release even if sticky.

Suggest the drawers be removed for access to examine the lid/seal.

The seal is integral to the lid, not a separate part/item.
