Hello! I am getting my living room back as my kids’ playroom is moving to the basement. It’s a blank slate. The awkward part is that there is a fireplace but it’s not centered in the room. It skews to the right. We won’t use the fireplace but feel like the seating area has to be centered to it. We want a nice seating area, a game table and a bar.

We thought the game table (36”x36”) would go in the upper left corner, and the bar would go along the 72” wall on the bottom. But I’m stumped on the seating arrangement. I feel like 1 couch, and 4 chairs is boring. If I have the ability to do anything I want, I don’t want boring.

Can anyone help with a layout? Am I wrong about the seating area being centered with the fireplace?

Put any actual "game table" in the basement playroom.

If, however, your table is not specifically game related, consider putting it in a corner and using it differently.

You could create a home office nook in one end of your living space -- which means that you'll not be leaving that end/corner space blank as you center your sitting area around the fireplace as you want..

Your home office nook could be anchored by a table that could be used as a desk but pulled out for a card game.

Does "formal" imply you have another space for tv watching? A family room? Or is this the only room for tv? If the former? Make the tv more secondary........use an adjacent wall. Better by far as the need for built in expense will be less, and same with media console and tv. As below...and I will hope that is the case. - you've another tv spot. Truly....... the view into the room is far better this way in EITHER case. A room needs to make CONVERSATION possible; nobody wants to shout at another off in the distance. And that love seat can just as easily be two VERY comfortable chairs. One quarter inch to a foot below. Don't forget a great rug.....9 x 12. Lighting matters.......art matters. : ) The very last thing you need? An accent wall via paint. One paint color will do it.....please. You will get more help if you post some inspo pics of rooms/styles you love. There are no mind readers here...

IMO a fixed chaise is never a good idea for seating and that is really bad since who ever sits there is forced to sit with there legs up on the chaise . Just get a sofa and 2 chairs no loveseat which really are just a big chair where you can't reach one arm rest. An ottoman that can have tray on it for snacks or drinks is a better choice IMOIf you trully want help we need a to scale floor plan posted here in a comment in jpeg format DO NOT start another post

Thank you all for the great suggestions! i love the raised platform idea, Cathy! The play area was a temporary set up, but your suggestion is a great separate seating arrangement, right by the windows to get some late afternoon sun! Rinked, thank you again for the various suggestions! I will look into sconces. the TV is a temporary set up (we will move it to the basement and keep the fireplace. The opposite wall has in built shelving so nothing really can be mounted there. good call on moving the liquor/bar area. i also liked that you switched up the two armchairs to be on the north side - it seems to fill up that area nicely. do you think i can/should add a sideboard/credenza/buffet anywhere in the living room? Some follow ups: we are planning to get rid of the grey chaise/couch and get a regular 3-seater sofa. do you recommend we stay with the cream/beige color scheme or perhaps try a green/chartreuse color or another gem tone or cognac-colored leather? will that go well with the two beige mid-century armchairs? we plan to buy a low square heavy coffee table to replace the current one. similarly, can i get away with not doing a cream/beige carpet? im worried about maintenance. lastly, do folks here think i need two separate seating sections in the living room given the size/length? id prefer not to since the raised platform is already a separate seating area. maybe by moving the two mid century armchairs, that would do enough to fill up the space. PS: eventually, we’ll do a full electric overhaul and add ceiling lights too!

Thanks for posting extra pics - very helpful. Good too that media console will fill the TV wall & be higher. It means TV can move to right (facing TV) towards the entry. That chair - yes, it’s definitely a keeper for a snuggle & reading chair. It would be perfect by the window. Try this - move loveseat to opposite side of sofa with back to the kitchen. Place it so there’s lots of room to walk behind & around it. Slide sofa down wall towards window. Will bookcase at that end of room fit on other side of kitchen doorway facing into the room? That would be one way to keep both. Place chair by window in the corner with half wall by entry - angled & facing sofa. The lamp on table that’s at other end of sofa - move it to side of chair by window & move the white table & lamp to corner created by sofa & loveseat. You’ll probably have to fiddle with the spacing but the goal is getting the chair placed byt the window & keeping a conversational grouping. Having the TV on a larger console allows it to be moved a bit for best viewing from both sofa & loveseat.

Here are two possible layouts. When I said dude, I’m at 36” x 36” fancy square table to play board games on, not an air hockey or pool table. Those will go in the basement. Any thoughts on these two layouts?

Not child's table -- actual table adults could use as a game table. Got it. That being the case, then either corner could work for your game table if you only occasionally use it.

Wondering, however, do y'all have weekly games or regularly put together jigsaw puzzles or use the game table pretty much every day or every other day?

If so, you might want to consider highlighting it (rather than relegating it to a corner) and make the end of the room where you locate it an entertainment space rather than an office space. A light specifically chosen for hanging over the table could do that -- think stained glass pendant light -- round, square or octagon -- could do that. If your family has a favorite ball team, the team colors might be used for the light.

Here's a 3D mock up of your room to help you visualize better. I've added one couch to the right wall of the room by the built in and added another couch next to the game table. You can add a couple of chairs facing the couch to complete the seating area. The game table can stay in the left corner of the room with the bar unit opposite. I could easily incorporate changes to this room If you'd like any. Hope this helps.
