I'm a really nervous hostess.Folks coming over for lunch. Help!!
Comments (8)That sounds good, but you could also just buy some crusty rolls. If you put some chicken in the salad, either from chicken breasts you broil or grill or from a rotisserie chicken from the store, you've got a complete meal. If your group expects dessert, you could make or buy some simple cookies and serve with ice cream. A bowl of candy bars gets a surprisingly enthusiastic reception, too!...See MoreGift Ideas Needed for an Author . . . My Cousin
Comments (21)FWIW, I actually think buying them dinner in their "town" is a bit awkward and certainly unnecessary. To me, one buys a meal for someone who visits them on their turf, partly really to say "I have a great place to share with you". One also might buy a meal for those who are struggling or lesser off, or junior in some way (young relatives, employees, etc). Or, if one were a houseguest and wanted to reciprocate; or if you golfed at their club. In the situation you describe, ostensibly you are going a little out of your way and giving up some resort time to spend with them. And, it is their turf. If anyone should pay for the group, it would be them IMHO. I'd be a bit surprised if they did not. All of this is to say that I think you have no need to do or give anything, even if you expect her to give you a book. (Which is a minor enough gift that it does not require reciprocation). But, if you did want to give something, I would make it small and personal and, unique to your area of the country. If it's small enough, it hardly matters what it is as long as you like it. When a recipient receives a small gift they really can't be burdened by not liking/needing it , etc. And IMHO you live in an area that is unusual and interesting to most; I think something "indigenous" to your area is a perfect. A small bowl or box? Or even a small frame....See MoreUnexpected Lunch Guest--What to Serve?
Comments (29)I like them too. We had some nest on the back of the farm several years ago, they completely demolished a sweet corn patch. We gave up the corn for the fun of watching the little birds hatch and grow. it's my understanding that they are legal to hunt in some states, I guess there are big populations in some spots. I have a friend who calls them "ribeye of the sky". He was amazed that we had such fun watching them. There are quite a few of them in southern Michigan by Elery's, there's even a winery called "Sandhill Crane Vineyards". We went to Lowe's one day for paint and there were a couple standing right under a tree in the parking lot, just watching people come and go, so I'm thinking they're either curious or not so smart. (grin) Cathy, I'm glad I'm not the only one who moves turtles. The girls used to call it "turtle patrol". We'd be driving along and I'd pull over and yell "turtle patrol". The girls would bail out and (while watching for traffic) move the turtle. I was told by a DNR officer to always put them on the side of the road in the direction they were heading or they'd just turn around and go right back. I don't know if that's true or not, but we always did/do. Yeah, Elery thinks I'm nuts, sometimes. Maybe most times. Annie...See Morebrunch/lunch/dinner? What was yours, today?
Comments (21)Tuna casserole is one of those dishes that requires NO recipe! Just ad lib - all you need is cooked pasta, tuna, seasonings, any veggies of your choice and a cream sauce. And some sort of topping - grated cheese, crushed saltines or potato chips, fried onions. Bake until hot and bubbly. This is my adult daughter's favorite dinner and she requests it specifically whenever she comes to visit. When she was little, I used to make it with a packaged macaroni and cheese (like Kraft or Velveeta) and add some sour cream. Quick, very easy and suited to a child's taste buds. Now I get a little more sophisticated and use rotini or spiral pasta (have also used shells and orecchiette), bechamel and real cheese. Sometimes I add mushrooms .And when making for her, always peas....but only canned peas :-)...See MoreAnnie Deighnaugh
