Kitchen cabinets and hardwood floor finish
Comments (8)We went with unstained cherry cabs and unstained maple floors, and let each darken naturally. Nice contrast, and you cannot see a speck of dust on the floors, LOL. Even my Jack Russell's white hairs on the floor disappear until you look at the floor at a sharp angle or vacuum and see how much you picked up. Also, scratches and dings don't show up as well on lighter floors. But the nicest thing is the contrast in the wood colors. I would be careful that both the floor and the cabs don't end up in the same hue or tone, it can look like those wood paneled rooms from the 50's. Get some oak samples, as large as you can find or buy, and have them stained and finished. Put them down on the floor and see what they look like in the various light conditions. And also see how they look against your base cabinets. It's worth the hassle and time, otherwise you might be stuck with a very expensive mistake....See MoreHardwood Floor stain for our kitchen
Comments (6)Is the kitchen floor continuous with the next room? If so, that's another reason to keep them the same color -- no awkward transition. Besides, I don't think it is possible for oak not to be warm, even unstained. :) If you have unfinished wood now, it'll darken up a bit with the finish and with time. Is the floor in the back of your kitchen near the wall the old wood or the new? I am no style guru and you will be the one having to look at the floor so this is just my opinion -- but I am thinking that two different floor colors might look better with two different woods, instead of having natural oak in one place and stained oak in another....See MoreHardwood floor and stained cabinets?
Comments (12)I recently renovated an 1899 Victorian duplex with existing hardwood floors, and I was worried about the same thing. I didn't want to do white cabinets but I was so worried about the whole place looking like it was hosed down in wood. I just made sure I chose cabinets that were definitely different than the floors -- in my case, my floors were pretty dark so I went with a lighter cabinet -- not "natural maple" light, but definitely lighter than the floors. I was very nervous about it, but when all was said and done, it looks great! (For the record, I didn't choose particularly light accents: I did emerald pearl granite countertops, and multi rajah slate tile backsplash. Everything looks fab!) Good luck!...See MoreNeed help picking a stain color for hardwoods in kitchen/den
Comments (11)i like the ebony or the 50/50 ebony/gray with your tile and granite since it has a cooler tone. one question is, do you plan to have a smooth glossy top coat? with darker color floors, that can sometimes show a lot of dirt, thus be a bit more high maintenance. we had dark glossy floors with a small dog in our previous home and all of his paw prints and dust could be seen everywhere. in our current house, the floors are matte finish and it shows nothing even though my cleaning skills have not improved, lol....See MoreSina Sadeddin Architectural Design
