AOC is the Eva Peron of American Politics

elvis

I love this analogy^^^, it's apt.

She preaches socialism while living the life of the privileged,” said Richard Manning, president of Americans for Limited Government, referencing the former first lady of Argentina who was known for dressing in designer gowns and jewels while advocating a socialist agenda.

“There is nothing wrong with spending money to make yourself look better, especially as a personality who depends upon visual mediums for her power. But it is a bad look to spend hundreds of dollars to get your hair done to make a video decrying income inequality,” Mr. Manning said.

The New York Democrat ventured into Last Tangle Salon on 19th Street Northwest last month and shelled out $80 for a haircut and $180 for lowlights, according to sources familiar with the salon. A 20% tip would have added $52 to the bill.

It was no accident that the Soviet elites in the Communist Party had dachas on the Black Sea, while the masses crowded a dozen people into two-bedroom apartments. They were able to shop in special food stores, where plenty of meat and good food were available instead of standing in line for hours to buy spoiled sausage, moldy beets, and vodka.

"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others," read a proclamation by the pigs in Orwell's Animal Farm. This philosophy has been used for more than 100 years now to justify the lavish lifestyle of communist elites. They don't see it as hypocrisy, Ocasio-Cortez spent thousands on gas-guzzling car rentals instead of using public transportation while pushing the Green New Deal.

AOC is an elitist and she loves the trappings of her new life. She enjoys getting driven to work, just blocks from the capital while the unwashed masses take METRO.

She flies when she can take Amtrak.

She loves her designer lipstick when drug store would do.

AOC lives in a swank apartment with security, and calls in "basic living accomodations".

Straight from the right wing press. At least she doesn’t wear a republican hair helmet.

In the past, it was the women who wore it, but now we see it on all republican sexes. Even Trump

The republican hair helmet costs even more and the propellant in the hairspray can probably be blamed for a large part of the ozone hole.

In his seventy years, there is little evidence of Trump ever using his billions to do any good in the world. He's spent it all on excesses. There is plenty of evidence of him ripping off the little guy.

I know most women have a favorite lipstick and, speaking as a woman, I certainly pay more for mine than getting something from Target and I'm happy to do so. I haven't gotten my hair cut in NY but a cut and highlight still runs over $100. For someone so much in the public eye, it really is important that she looks good (otherwise you'd be criticizing her for that, meow).

I'm sure that some of her choices (apartment, being driven to work) might have to do with security, especially with the hyped up rhetoric that Trump supporters have created. In those choices, you may well have made her what she is.

Trumps who embrace capitalism...

Wrong, on so many counts.

Associating trump with capitalism is a joke...him and his ilk are the ones that are giving capitalism such a bad rep that others are looking to socialism as a solution.

trump's industrial policies show he is not into capitalism at all, from tariffs and shredding free trade agreements to policies designed to favor one industry over another where he gets to pick the winners and losers, such as coal vs clean energy and steel users vs steel makers. And his handouts to agriculture which was already a welfare industry are far from any capitalist ideal. Even his deregulation is designed to institute his policy and business choices, not to benefit the market itself and make the playing field more competitive.

His pressuring the Fed is yet another example of foisting his personal political ambitions on one of the key levers of economic stability, while his tax cut clearly chose rich investors to be even bigger winners at the expense of the vast majority of consumers.

But personally he finds capitalism anathema. Rather he is into crony capitalism bigly. He likes to hob knob with rich government leaders who can do him some personal good, gaining access to funding and markets and government influencers that are far outside the realm of free markets or perfect competition.

"Her part"? Her salary is separate from her budget. Paying more to her underlings does not diminish her salary.

All Members in the House receive the same allowance to hire staff. Members can distribute this (generally) as they wish, but cannot employ more that 18 permanent employees. (The 18 does not include temporary employees and interns).

Just out of curiosity I just looked at the front page of over a dozen news sites, both conservative and liberal. The only mentions I saw of AOC was Washington Times up top, and Huffpo down low (response to Washington Times.)

I also did a quick search on women’s haircut prices. In 2016 the average in DC was $78.10. I doubt $80 in 2020 is considered extravagant. Did a man report this?

I’d suggest other news outlets than ones who make a woman’s common haircut a leading story.

It's plain as the back end of the goat, the difference.

AOC wants OUR money to redistribute to people she thinks deserves it, and we didn't build that and we have enough according to that Hope and Change Miracle BO.

Examples of public transport include city buses, trolleybuses, trams (or light rail) and passenger trains, rapid transit(metro/subway/underground, etc.) and ferries. Public transport between cities is dominated by airlines, coaches, and intercity rail.

As already said, this is not outrageous for a cut and lights esp given it's NYC where it seems everything costs double. Rather than using this to call her elitest I would have first used good ole Google to see what these things go for. Doing lights is very time consuming for a stylist so $$$. I get them but luckily only pay product cost since my sis is my stylist. :)

NYC would obviously be in the top bracket. And long hair obviously costs more. Note this is JUST for the lights, not the cut and tip.

All in all it's ridiculous to check how much a woman spends on makeup and hair styling. This is about more than money. A woman with modest income or even on pension might be spending more PROPORTIONALLY on this stuff than the woman who is criticised here. We do a lot of crazy stuff to make ourselves feel positive. A retired friend of mine spends 125 a month to have her hair colored. Our incomes are similar but I have mine done at a place that charges 50. She wouldn't change with me for anything. She will do it until the day she can't afford it any longer.

BS, every politician has money so expecting them all to live the life of a pauper before you allow them the right to stand up for the poor is plain foolish.

This is not about AOC this is about discrediting a woman. Do they also discredit men for their expensive suites? Should all male politicians wear second hand clothes before they can champion higher wages for the poor lest they be called hypocrites? Should we now expect the rich to do the same, if so we won't get any help for the lower income citizens.

Feel the same about penicillin...you know, derived from mold

BTW, an FYi about the benefits of Botox:

Medical uses

Botulinum toxin is used to treat a number of therapeutic indications, many of which are not part of the approved drug label.

Muscle spasticity

Botulinum
toxin is used to treat a number of disorders characterized by
overactive muscle movement, including post-stroke spasticity,
post-spinal cord injury spasticity, spasms of the head and neck,[8]eyelid,[9]vagina,[10] limbs, jaw, and vocal cords.[11] Similarly, botulinum toxin is used to relax clenching of muscles, including those of the oesophagus,[12]jaw,[13]lower urinary tract and bladder,[14] or clenching of the anus which can exacerbate anal fissure.[15] It may also be used for improper eye alignment.[16] Botulinum toxin appears to be effective for refractory overactive bladder.[17]

Other muscle disorders

Strabismus
is caused by imbalances in the actions of muscles that rotate the eyes,
and can sometimes be relieved by weakening a muscle that pulls too
strongly, or pulls against one that has been weakened by disease or
trauma. Muscles weakened by toxin injection recover from paralysis after
several months, so it might seem that injection would then need to be
repeated. However, muscles adapt to the lengths at which they are
chronically held,[18]
so that if a paralyzed muscle is stretched by its antagonist, it grows
longer, while the antagonist shortens, yielding a permanent effect. If
there is good binocular vision, the brain mechanism of motor fusion, which aligns the eyes on a target visible to both, can stabilize the corrected alignment.

In January 2014, botulinum toxin was approved by UK's Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) for treatment of restricted ankle motion due to lower limb spasticity associated with stroke in adults.[19]

On July 29, 2016, Food and Drug Administration
(FDA), of the United States of America approved abobotulinumtoxinA for
injection for the treatment of lower limb spasticity in pediatric
patients two years of age and older.[20]
AbobotulinumtoxinA is the first and only FDA-approved botulinum toxin
for the treatment of pediatric lower limb spasticity. In the United
States of America, the FDA approves
the text of the labels of prescription medicines. The FDA approves
which medical conditions the drug manufacturer may sell the drug for.
However, those approved by the FDA to prescribe these drugs may freely
prescribe them for any condition they wish, called off-label use.
Botulinum toxins have been used off-label for several pediatric
conditions, including infantile esotropia.[21]

Excessive sweating

Khalaf
Bushara and David Park were the first to demonstrate a non-muscular use
of BTX-A while treating patients with hemifacial spasm in England in
1993, showing that botulinum toxin injections inhibit sweating, and so
are useful in treating hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).[22] BTX-A has since been approved for the treatment of severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweating of unknown cause), which cannot be managed by topical agents.[11][23]

Migraine

In 2010, the FDA approved intramuscular botulinum toxin injections for prophylactic treatment of chronic migraine headache.[24]

And that's just for the limos. https://www.citizensforethics.org/mike-pence-doonbeg-cost-nearly-600k/ …

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

@AOC

40 million Americans live in poverty under today’s extreme inequality, yet the right-wing want you to blame Democratic socialism for their own moral failures.

Our policies, like Medicare for All, advance prosperity for working people.

They’re just mad we look good doing it https://twitter.com/jacobinmag/status/1182274911181705216 …

Jacobin

@jacobinmag

Sad to see democratic socialists like Bernie and @AOC do things like buy winter coats and get haircuts.

Don’t they know that real socialists avoid purchasing goods and services? https://twitter.com/washtimes/status/1182088011158343680 …

I think people are confusing socialism with poverty. Consider people in Scandinavian countries. They share and they can afford not only heath care but hair coloring.

LOL patriciae. It's obvious Trump supporters think, or like to spread propaganda that democratic socialism (some elements we already have) is REALLY disguised communism just waiting to jump out and slap a babuska on your head and throw you into a bread line....with no shoes...in the snow.

Too many "isms" to keep track of maybe.

There's very little chance that any extreme elements of socialism could take root here. Our capitalistic system is too strong, our greed over the top, our sense of identity too individual...that's good and bad IMHO. A little bit more of the "for the common good" philosophy wouldn't kill us. Incorporating a few of the best elements of socialism such as medical benefits all. We need to remove a lot of the power insurance agencies hold; that's your monster. We still DO vote so we have a fair bit of control over congress and what our country becomes. AOC doesn't have the power to overhaul us...quite yet anyway. But keep yapping about her and giving her a chance to speak out and she'll end up POTUS before you know it.

OnabotulinumtoxinA ( Botox ), is made from the bacteria that causes botulism.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Feel the same about penicillin...you know, derived from mold

Harmless mold^^^. OnabotulinumtoxinA: not so much. The leftist prog who brought up the topic of Botox was using it in cosmetic context, not in its medicinal uses.

Penicillin mold is amazingly toxic even though it produces an amazing antibacterial probably because it is so toxic? Hair spray can kill you and the colors in your eye makeup are frequently exceedingly toxic and so it goes.

When we embrace the sensible parts of socialism vs some sort of scary totalitarian version we show good sense. We support our culture as a group like having fire departments that we pay for together rather than buying our own fire truck and invest in roads and bridges. It has been a good model for some of the world's happiest societies.

Elvis, if you hair grows and you aren't allowed to get it cut by people who cut hair how do you propose you deal with the extra dead keratin coming off your head? Scandinavian people have folks with scissors just like we do in spite of having a higher degree of social sharing.

What a woman pays for her haircut and color -- what an utterly ridiculous thing to get all worked up about.

Does it help trump supporters put the Kurds out of their minds?

They’re not worried about that, Leona. On the other thread someone claims to have a secret source and trump knew that Turkey was about to attack. trump’s a hero. He save those Special Forces troops. So says the secret source that can’t be named.

I'll say it again -- what a woman spends on her makeup and haircut is none of our business. And it has nothing to do with austerity. If spending on lipstick and haircuts is a political statement then lord have mercy.

I think the point is that Trump is rich and would like to see all Americans achieve as much as they can, while AOC would like to be rich but wants the "masses" to live austere lives. You know, like cut their own hair, and walk or ride a horse.

I've never deleted any of my posts except when there is a misunderstanding or disagreement resolved and in that case I posted that I deleted, and why. Otherwise, continuity of discussion is disrupted.

As to the other question, which leftist prog are you referring to?

At least AOC is spending her own money. Unlike Trump, who spends tens of millions of taxpayer dollars to vacation at the resorts that he owns and profits from.

Hmm, Trump funnels tax money into his own pockets, and AOC is the socialist for spending her own money coloring her hair?

The right is becoming increasingly desperate.

Desperate to deflect attention away from Trump. Focusing on AOC's hair, Beto's flu shots, whether or not Warren's pregnancy anecdotes from 40 years ago were accurate.

You know, the really important stuff to focus on instead of Trump betraying our allies, selling our military services to SA, doubling the deficit and working on getting impeached, lol.

Until then we can keep talking about the cost of AOC's highlights, which are less expensive than what I pay in CA.

At least AOC is spending her own money. Unlike Trump, who spends tens of millions of taxpayer dollars ...

Occasional Cortex didn't have her own money. She's living on our money (we the taxpayers), which she's happy to tell us how to spend.

If she's truly spending "her own money", we'd better take another look at her campaign finances, there have been problems with that.

Maybe three times is the charm!

1)The complaint names Ocasio-Cortez and Chakrabarti as respondents. It asks the FEC to investigate and audit the two PACs, saying they were engaged in an "an elaborate scheme to avoid proper disclosure of campaign expenditures."

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/politics/ocasio-cortezs-chief-of-staff-ran-1m-slush-fund-by-diverting-campaign-cash-to-his-own-companies

2)Here’s where the story takes a darker turn. AOC and her staff lied about the fundraiser. It was not, in fact, to support the Green New Deal. Instead, all contributions at the event were earmarked specifically for AOC’s campaign funds. Everyone involved directly gave money to her 2020 campaign. That’s a pretty dirty move. More importantly, it was potentially illegal.

https://www.americanlibertyreport.com/articles/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-just-committed-campaign-fraud-again/

3)Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been hit with allegations of financial fraud by a Conservative group with the FEC.

This financial fraud allegation involves an illegal diversion of of thousands of dollars through an allied PAC to boyfriend Riley Roberts.

"Occasional Cortex didn't have her own money. She's living on our money (we the taxpayers), which she's happy to tell us how to spend."

So do you think every state and federal employee who spends their money they get in exchange for their work is living off of taxpayer money? They are paid from tax dollars, yes, but it becomes their own money in exchange for their work for the state/country.

People living on taxpayer money are the ones collecting paychecks without working, and that is not AOC.

Elvis, just curious, are you fine with Trump personally profiting from tax payer money at his resorts? Seems like he also wants to decide where our taxpayer money should go, and it's into his own pockets.

Yeah I figured there wouldn't be a real answer.

I have yet to see a Trump supporter address the topic. Yet somehow I don't think they would be so tolerant if a Democrat was spending tax payer money at their own business.
