Ceiling light ideas

Adding recess lighting is pricy, what kind of ceiling lights do you suggest for a rustic modern/industrial mountain home. Ceiling is 9ft tall. The light over island is not directly in middle. Island and hallway light come on together and sink is separate. Sink overlooks dining and living area. Thanks! Also attached is pic of dining room light.

Because you actually need both of these fixtures for light I would really say adding recessed lighting is the way to go. Really there are a lot of companies who will give you package deals for 6 can install, I would highly recommend saving for that rather than trying to put anything decorative here. A good rail system, which would be your alternative as opposed to just putting another flush mount light in the middle of the room will cost you as well. You can buy a rail kit for not much but then that leaves you with the sink fixture which should also be giving you the same or more light than you have now. much like your dining fixture, most "industrial looking fixture is going to use the same bulb as you have here, which are not great for kitchen lighting.

If you must go with replacing what you have, do a semi-flush light in the center that has 3 bulbs and do a rail light over the island with 2-3 pendants and some directional lights on it. in the hallway, you could do a bell jar semi-flush fixture.

I suggest rail over the sink because the power supply can be placed anywhere. check out the Barrington collection from kichler lighting.

One of my customers spruced up their unfinished basement laundry & utility area by painting the joists white, putting down some sticky-back tiles (appearance of grouted and glossy mosaic tile) and installing casing (molding) around the two small, high windows. Lastly, they painted their mortared walls. In your case, installing some drywall (even without doing the ceiling) would help greatly. That's an inexpensive solution to consider.

Personally, I'm not a fan of wall sconces. Recessed lighting is a good way to add lights without making the drop ceiling seem lower than it already is. Another way you can brighten the room is by painting the ceiling. We had ugly beige tiles with brown supports in our kitchen and half bath, which drew your eyes to the ceiling, made it seem lower, and really emphasized the fact that we had a drop ceiling and not a normal one. So we had them painted, which helped everything lighten up and disappear more. The kitchen has a very light blue ceiling with light grey walls and the bathroom has a white ceiling with light aqua walls. It helps the entire room brighten and makes you forget that it's even a drop ceiling.
