How do I get rid of this plague of compost flies?
Comments (43)Just a quick update... First off, thanks again to everyone who posted here, your advice was very welcome. I had surprising difficulty finding some proper soil/compost/stuff/whatever for the house plants. All the local garden centres had sold out, and I still haven't got any. However, I cut back on the watering quite drastically, and now only water when the plants look like they need it. The plants look as fine as they ever did, my chilli plants are all flowering, and the flies have basically gone. We still get the odd one or two, but nothing that would make me think twice. We don't see them around the plants any more, which makes me think that the few we see are either tough ones that haven't had the decency to die since we dried out there homes, or ones that have come from elsewhere. I still intend to repot as and when I can get some soil, but it's a lot less urgent now. Thanks again....See MoreMillions of fruit flies in my compost bin--is thi a problem?
Comments (58)A few more thoughts: A compost pile made with fresh manure will run hot and will not have worms in it to begin with. Decomposition is done by a wide variety of microbes and insects at higher temps. Worms only inhabit cool piles. The 'worms' that affect animals are different species entirely from earthworms and one should not assume that medications for one will affect the other. They might, they might not. Finally, vet drugs (and human ones too for that matter) undergo a battery of tests in order to be registered for sale in the US. This includes internal metabolism, where and how much of the original compound is excreted, and how fast it breaks down after that. So there is at least some attention paid to that issue. The dilution effect and the general probability of breakdown causes me to not worry about vet medications in manure. I am much more concerned about the persistent herbicides in the hay they ate because there is actual evidence of it harming gardens....See MoreWhite flies in veggies
Comments (2)Really that bad? I usually have swarms of Whiteflies so bad in the front. it's embarrasing when someone walks up to the front door. I noticed they had eggs laid all under my Hollys in front. The Hollys were very old and ugly. I cut them down and put out on the street. This Summer I did't see hardly any. I have heard they usually find a host plant and gravitate towards that. They are particularly fond of Privet (Yuck I don't know why Lol). I was thinking because of the really hot and dry Summer perhaps not many eggs hatched. Anyway back to your original question. It is rather late in the year for this, but next Spring you can try. Purchase a box of ladybugs. You can get online for about 12.00 for 1500 or so. Spray your plants that are having the problems with Whiteflies. so they are damp and release the Lady bugs. They will stay where is damp and plenty of food is present. They will lay eggs, and the lady bug larva (which look like tiny little gila monsters) will devour the whitefly larva before they can mature. Another trick(providing you don't have pets) is use the old fashioned kind of snail and slug bait. The Whitefly larva love it and eat it, then die before they can mature. I hope this is helpful....See MoreSudden swarms of tiny white flies all around garden
Comments (4)I often see them starting a bit earlier and yes, they seem to prefer tomatoes. This year was a prolonged cool and wet spring and it is an off year for them, Foliage is where they live. More info HERE. tj...See MoreAustin
