Please help! Cherry hardwood real or fake?
Comments (9)I feel that the Kempas will look wonderful in your kitchen. I feel you are better off with Kempas floors that lean more toward the cherry color than cherry hardwood floors despite the beauty of American Cherry if you have a lot of floor traffic being that Kempas is a harder wood. If I did not have to have a hard floor, I may have went with the American Cherry floors since to me that beauty is unmatched but the 950 Janka Rating is not good for me with 4 small dogs and home office client traffic. I love Kempas hardwood floors so I feel you made a great choice. I keep going back and forth between the Brazilian Cherry, Kempas, Pradoo and Santos Mahogany engineered hardwood floors since I find all of these exotic woods gorgeous. It is just that I really seem to like the BR-111 line due to the sawn cut and the looks of its grain and they do not offer Kempas. So I would have to go with Bella Kempas engineered hardwood floors or Hartco Valenza Collection which both have a thicker plywood base and are 1/4" wider but cost more also. I like that the Kempas only has a medium degree of color change and not a dramatic color change difference and I like that it is about the same price as Brazilian Cherry while the Pradoo and the Santos Mahogany cost more despite their beautiful grain and coloring....See Morewhat else goes with a rainforest marble countertop?
Comments (2)Thank you for the reply. I found the pictures of Pharaoh's kitchen (gorgeous!) and also a gallery on a kitchen site that combined the two. It can work! I think I will keep the floor more mellow (maybe a carbonized strand bamboo?) But since I keep going back to that wood, I probably wouldn't be happy with something else. One more decision done. (Didn't realize how much work this would be! Fun, but work.) Thank you for the help....See Moreplease post pictures of black and cherry kitchens

Comments (16)It shouldn't necessarily be possible from a couple feet away to tell whether a given board is veneered or solid. Edge banding is typically a disaster waiting to happen and should be avoided at all costs. MDF panels, if you go that way, can be edged with solid wood, a much more robust solution. With solid wood every board is different, and care and attention has to be paid to color and grain matching. (With factory-made cherry cabinets this is frequently, and glaringly not done, then the differences are badly disguised with stain). Plywood will typically be more uniform and free from sapwood. The style of door is the primary consideration. Frame and panel doors with raised panel have to be made from solid wood, Slab doors can be done either way. Frame and panel doors, if properly made from well seasoned wood almost never warp. Slab doors will be more prone to change shape with changes in humidity. Some pieces of plywood move more than solid in my experience, other less, and sadly I don't know how to predict which is which in advance. Veneer comes in a myriad of forms, either rotary cut or sliced, The sliced veneer can be laid up in random, repeating, or bookmatched patterns to achieve the look you want. A specialty plywood supplier will have all of these options available for a common veneer like cherry. A cabinet maker can also make shop-made veneer to exactly match solid wood parts, assuming he has the sequential boards cut from the same log to permit precise matching. There's no end to how crazy you can get if you're really fussy about color and grain in cherry!...See MoreCocotini Hartman
