Yellow blooming ID

While driving along a country road today I saw a mass of bright yellow. They were growing in a dry, sandy/gravely roadbank. The straplike leaves had stiff hairs on both sides which laid in one direction. Location is Maryland, clearly a fall bloomer, can you name it? Pix to follow.

Thanks for the ID, interesting that Swamp Sunflower does not require wetland conditions. The flowers were busy with pollinators. I'll have this sunflower over supermarket mums anyday.

Could be Helianthus angustifolius, swamp sunflower. Pretty sure that's what it is. Nice pictures!

Thank you esh ga. I'll probably be wearing gloves when I move it. I'm into native plants anyway, so I figure that I should keep it. It was a volunteer that I've never even watered, and it survived full sun and long dry periods. And looks pretty.

Hi again , I just wrote you about raspberries, and now noticed your offer of different day lilies which I am also interested in. Aside from the plants I already mentioned, I could also spare several red bergamot (Monarda). I will also look if my red currant plant has made some babies, but not sure... in any case, it may not be the best time to transplant, bec. its already loaded with tiny berries...

Many of our endangered plants here in NC live "on the edges," if they don't get hit with herbicide. People are trying to convince DOT to put up do not mow signs, but herbicides can be carried by wind currents, so they are an especially bad threat.
