Comments (15)Here is the excerpt from the article I was talking about. Vigor is an attribute of H. papilio and bulbs are comparatively large. This vigor is passed on to progeny with several parent combinations. Flower characteristics is another issue. Most H. papilio crossed with another species usually will result in F1 seedlings which show flowers influenced by the other parent. Flower form and size may be affected, but color predictably will be dominated by the other parent. Without parent knowledge, one would be hard pressed to visually identify H. papilio traits in many of its F1 hybrids. The same may hold true with the F2 generation unless back crossed with H. papilio (and this could be a longer shot than expected). Third generation F3 crosses with both parents having H. papilio in the parent trail have produced seedlings that reveal some H. papilio traits. (And a limited few are somewhat close.) I think this explains why I have been disappointed with many of my papilio crosses. Maida...See MoreGreen and Saturn question
Comments (19)Beatrice, your Green and Saturn looks absolutely beautiful and healthy :-))) I have since brought mine up from the basement and the leaves have started to stand straight up and their color is coming back. I usually mark the tags of my evergreen hippies with green ink to remind myself that they should grown as an evergreen, otherwise I forget or get confused. I'll make sure to include this one from now on. I did purchase my yungacense seeds from Ebay by Pavel who is also in this list. Donna, thank you for the encouraging words. Hopefully, in time I may have some beautiful flowers...let's hope so :-)))...See MoreAnd your favorite Hippeastrum color is?

A rich, red color - which we can already discover in the good old "Red Lion" which color looks "blazing" provides a good fraction of the "magic" in Knight Star lilies (Hippeastrrums) - and I had just purchased one (it yielded 3 scapes, 4 florets each, a nice reward for the 4 Euros I had spent on the bulb) in order to INDULGE in the red phaenomenon AGAIN. Nevertheless, in the German cut flower market, "Red Lion" had been replaced through "Liberty" then, and is replaced by "Ferrari" right now, and I can only guess why....See MoreJulie Wignell
