The old timers around here say that a heavy acorn crop means a hard winter ahead. Whether or not that is true, I don't know, but the crop is heavy this year and the squirrels have been taking full advantage of the abundant food supply.

Attended Homecoming with 9 of my sorority sisters yesterday. It was 55 degrees, but I came home with a sunburn.

I love beautiful wood pieces, especially when they are made from someone's personal tree. I have a couple of pieces made by friends, one of which is an ornament that was made from this man's own trees that are in the woods where I used to ride my horse. He does gorgeous work and I admire that talent.

I don't have any nut pictures per se :) though I do have a shagbark hickory tree in my backyard that the squirrels bombard me with the nuts all fall long.

Annie, my woolly bear pic was taken February 21, 2014 on my Pennsylvania porch. It's color pattern is much the same as yours. What and for when do you suppose it was forecasting for the weather in February!

This year's Halloween mailbox.

I took THIS photo yesterday. Elm tree, we're cutting down to roof level. It's supposed to snow 2.75" Thursday. The trees haven't even started turning yellow .....yet.....

2.75" of snow and the tree looks like that? Bizarre.

I had a very tall Siberian Elm down front pruned up this Spring. It was always dropping branches and twigs and dead bits (sometimes bigger than bits). Instead of cutting it down I opted for the pruning and the company did a fantastic job. Cost me a pretty penny tho.

yeonassky....those smell terrible. It's a western conifer seed bug. Yuck!

schoolhouse....we were quoted $2700 for a tree service to cut a tree this size to the ground. There are two more this size we already pruned in the backyard.

Wow, that's a lot of money but better to pay that to a professional. By "cutting down to roof level" do you mean topping?

I wanted to do a ETA to the above: The strings of lights on the twigs in the mailbox cover are battery-operated and on timers. One string consists of little purple bats and the other orange/yellow pumpkins. The batteries last about a week, so I buy AAs in bulk. ha

schoolhouse......not hiring it done. We got the quote by accident from a guy we hired to climb one of our trees @ another house. We're cutting ALL large branches at the houses roof top on our side of the tree...it splits in two about 8' off the ground.

Not topping...since we're leaving half. It's the neighbors tree. Just cutting what's hanging over on our side.

Ok, I understand now how you are cutting the tree.
