The first thing that strikes me is that your curtain rod is too short which is why you have to push the curtains to the side which kills the vibe in this room. Get longer rods and linen-type curtains that are fairly similar to the wall color which will give the room warmth without looking busy. Please make sure that your area rug is as large as possible because that will make this room look fabulous. Little bitty rugs do not. I would choose an Oriental rug in warm colors because it will hide little accidents, at least until you can address them. I would definitely get a sofa, so great for cuddling with your husband and kids. I would place it in front of the window for good lighting for reading but also because it gives you the best sight lines into other areas of your home. Instead of a coffee table consider a large ottoman with a lid so that you have plenty of storage space. Please don't buy a brown or black leather couch. They look dated and are so difficult to decorate around. Try beige or caramel, with two chairs in contrasting colors, perhaps a nice blue or green, colors that will be in the carpet hopefully. You can also use the carpet colors to choose pillows for your soft furniture. Find some nice pictures to put on the walls, a large green plant, a bookcase or two (books are a must in a room) and side tables for lamps. By now your room will look gorgeous and be pretty well furnished and, most important of all, will be comfortable and fun to be in.

This is a lovely room! In a small space continuity is important. Before you add or paint anything else, paint the daybed and both chairs a dark brown, British Colonial as mentioned above. This way you can add the color you want here and there. The table in front of the daybed needs to be higher, like a tea table height. Use the chest on the side. To make the daybed more comfy, add old fashioned wedge pillows across the back and then the big pillows on top. Thanks Patricia. I was considering that possibility as well. Each dresser measures 32" wide. The ceilings are vaulted. What size do you think would work? Maybe 24 wide by 36 tall? I will definitely be posting more pics for advice. I'm in the middle of disassembling my bed to put my new one in and I have curtains coming today that I need to hang. I'll be looking for advice on the whole space to help finish it up. They may not look it, but they're a bit too tall for night tables. I have a pair of Tommy Bahama nightstands that my husband bought and is really attached to, so I need to keep those anyway. I do plan on refinishing those as well as adding new hardware.

Congratulations on your beautiful new home! It might look very nice, but understated, to have a large wooden box planter at the far right end from the entry door, with the wood a decent match to either your front door, or your columns. You could consider a small tree-like shrub to grow in the box there over the next several years, something like the "Little Ollie" which is a dwarf type of non-fruiting (i.e. no mess!) olive bush. It gets about 6 feet tall at maturity so it wouldn't outgrow the space, and the silvery undersides of the green leaves would be so nice with the gray in your stone and siding. The second thing you could consider is a complementary piece of outdoor sculpture to put under the window. Just keep your eyes out for the next year or two until you see something that is meaningful, either for your personal heritage, or a special regional theme of the area of your new home. The image of a nice piece of low-format art in front of the window, and a large but quiet container tree at the end of the porch seems simple but inviting to me.
