Please help add style to my safe kitchen choices: pendants, backsplash

We are well underway with our kitchen remodel. After taking it down to the studs, walls are up and plastered. Cabinets are to be installed next week, along with countertop measurements.

Now it is time to choose the details that I think will give the room some personality. However, I don't know what that personality is supposed to be. Our house is a 1970s garrison colonial. We don't want to go with farmhouse or contemporary as neither seems appropriate to our home.

So far, all of our choices have been pretty "safe" and standard - Medallion Walton cabinets in white icing (a type of shaker door style) for the perimeter and in brandywine for the island. Viaterra Minuet (marble look) for all countertops. Gunstock hardwood floors. Stainless appliances with the exception of the dishwasher which will have a cabinet panel. Benjamin Moore barren plain for the walls.

I feel like this next round or choices will give us the opportunity to give the project some style. I've spent hours (HOURS!) looking at inspiration photos and like certain elements of each, but can't find an overall theme that appeals. I fear choosing design elements that will be discordant with each other.

Any suggestions for just a regular middle class home? We don't have soaring ceilings (only 8 feet) or special architectural details to play up - just a rectangular room with a slider to the deck on one side and a bay window on the other.

The picture below is not the exact layout (for instance, fridge is now located where the doorway is - we moved the door; island now has an overhang for seating instead of cabinets on back). But gives you a sense of the room's basic style/colors (or lack thereof).

Oh, and to add to the challenge, some structural issues were revealed during the renovation that have eaten up the budget. We can afford nice but not extravagant. Would love suggestions of choices that may be surprisingly inexpensive without looking cheap.

Thanks in advance!!
