Exterior window trim advice?

My 1990s ranch home has vinyl windows without trim on the exterior. I’d like to add trim, similar to what this picture shows. It looks to me like this trim was added on TOP of the lapped siding rather than the siding being cut away first. (The trim in the pic is PVC.)

Is this a bad idea? The back (south side) of my house has flat wall boards that look like fake bead board, but the front (north side) has lapped siding. I live in rainy SW Washington state, where we get 40 inches of rain a year!

Obviously I would caulk the cap, but it would be tricky to thoroughly caulk the side edges.

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

I'd want flashing above the head trim.

Hi again, Here is the architect's elevation pic. The one above does not show the cladding material, and I just figured out how to send the architect's picture. This image does not show the window trim that we are planning around the windows on the siding part of house. After playing around with house visualizer sites, I am leaning towards the following body: greige - Quary stone board and batten house trim, soffits, facia, freize board - charcoal roof - charcoal (already done) windows - white (already done) window trim around door and siding windows - charcoal board and batten I think the greige has enough gray in it that pairing it with charcoal (not sure how dark of charcoal to go) should work. I wanted to also let you know that the front door will be changed to a 8 foot double door with 3/4 glass (hopefully this will tie in the deck door better). With the taller front door, the transom above will be shorter. Also there will be a bit more brick over garage than is showing. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance. Carol

I think we have settled on SW 6194 Basil for the house color only because I really like green houses. However, if you have an eye for color, please feel free to offer a different color. All I know is I hate this light blue. We originally thought SW 6193 Privilege green with SW 6236 Grays Harbor, but I really want a slightly darker green house. However, if we go with this darker green, I cannot figure out what color to paint the trim. Our garage door and our back facing windows have been replaced with a stone color and I don't want to paint them. (The front wood windows are the originals but will be replaced with the stone vinyl windows in the next year or 2.) I just bought SW 9111 Antler Velvet to try with them (we think our windows are close to SW 9110 Malabar) and I don't like it at all. If you have any advice, I would appreciate it. I like earthy colors. I like the idea of a blue trim with the Basil, but I really have no idea if that color combo would work AND I don't know which SW color. The painter we hired uses Sherwin-Williams paint. Front and back photos of house attached. (House faces north.) Thank you!

I’m experiencing the exact same dilemma. What option did you go with? I’m afraid going all black (window and trim) will be too much. I have a combination exterior house, brick and shingles. The shingles are painted dark grey. Do you have pics of the final product?

"I figure if they were any good at what they do, they’d be working for themselves and earning $$$$ instead of letting Lowe’s find jobs for them and take a % off the top." Being good at installing windows (or any trade) is one skill, but running your own business, is a completely different skill set. That's like saying plumbers and electricians who work for a brand/small business must not be good. Except that brand or small business has somebody answering the phones, scheduling estimates and appointments and has the capital for equipment and insurance. Working for Lowe's doesn't mean you're inherently bad trade. It means all you want to do is install or fix, not the business end aspects. It might be the easiest way for people to get into the business, might be the easiest way for somebody trying to get back into the business, end their career or just somebody who's trying to make money. The problem could simply be the process of the Lowe's third-party installer system.

Sides are normally just a caulk joint. If you are feeling very industrious, you could rip the trim in a manner to close the gap slightly, but it would be a caulk joint.

The other option here is the cut the siding back in these locations and apply the trim straight to the sheathing wall (if there is any).

How about some pictures and more details about if there is any sheathing and what the rest of the make up is. You are adding a big "speed bump" to a wall that hasn't leaked before and may be introducing some issues in a very wet climate.

Windows on WA, thanks for your thoughts. I haven’t pulled up any wood to see the flashing (or lack of flashing), so I can’t give you more details other than what the pictures above show. You’re right that I may open a can of worms for a cosmetic improvement!

you could just butt it up to what looks like a J -channel built in to the window. I think you would be safe to do it without any caulking or head flashing. Putting in a head flashing would not really be that beneficial in this case and can be a real pain to get in correctly.

The pic you showed is a pretty simple design. You could Could pre assemble 1 and just hang it there like a picture to see if like it.

There is also azek board for trim which is an weatherproof composite which can be cut to size and come is various widths x 8' x .75 inches thick and is less expensive than PVC sold at Home Depot. There is an online company "Architectural Depot.com" which I used to order colonial style brick mold for my front door. Their website is user friendly and interactive in that you pick your style and size you need and the calculator give you the exact price. The order form is online as well. The offer brick mold in wood and polyurethane.
