I would not spend the large upgrade money on an iffy to waterproof design that greatly increased cleaning. But I would especially not spend those big upgrade funds for a guest bath.

I would not put in a “wet room“ on a second floor without an elevator. On a 2nd floor it might be harder to lower the floor joists enough to sink the room if it all has to be built up to drain. If one daughter loves to take baths and will one day be visiting with small children, I would definitely keep a nice tub there.

IMO wet rooms are horrible designs. You would always need to wear something (shoes, not socks) waterproof when going in after someone has showered. And unless you have a great rug set up, water will get tracked everywhere. I would not like that, but like I said, that's only my opinion.

Twice the plumbing and 4 times the waterproofing. I think the "cost-effective" ship has sailed.

I agree with Cook's Kitchen about wet rooms. Not a good idea unless you like cleaning the tub every time someone takes a shower.

In a perfect world, with both bathrooms large enough to have both a separate shower and tub, I'd go for that. If not, then have either a tub/shower combination in both bathrooms, or a tub in one and a large shower in the other, or any other combination that fits the space.

We had a real wet room when we lived in Tokyo in a large rented apartment. Luckily it was the kids bathroom and I had a daily housekeeper! The kids loved being able to have an overflowing bubble bath and being able to throw the foam all over the enclosed/sealed wet room.

I would never want to have, or build one, in my own house.

Sorry, I’m late to this thread. But could you tell me, are there two bathrooms upstairs, or only one?

I think for guests, they would feel awkward about how they should "leave" the wet room - dry it all down with the towels? leave a huge squeegee for them to use? etc.

It's a novelty and, if it were me, I'd bless than comfortable using it as a guest. Give 'em the standard!

If you have only one bathroom upstairs make it a tub/shower combo, the widest tub that will fit. Put in really beautiful, smooth, easy to clean finishes (porcelain tile) and a niche, ledge or other place for products. If you have two bathrooms upstairs make one that has a tub/shower combo, and make the other one have a walk-in shower. You can make any bathroom feel very luxurious by choosing nice finishes. Your college children will appreciate it when they’re home, and when they visit in future years with their own families they will appreciate having a tub to bathe the little ones.

It’s not ever a good idea. It‘s a terrible design that keeping up with the Jones’s people copy to one up their neighbor that they can spend more than they did. And keep on spending with a maid to keep it clean.

I have something similar in my master bath, with a 2 headed shower, and a closing glass door so no draft. If the shower heads are far enough from the tub, spray on the tub is no issue. The point of trying to bathe a toddler, after someone has showered............sure. But my kids sometimes splashed water out of the tub in which case this wet room set up would have been superb. (My kids were no longer needing supervised baths when we moved into this house)
