Help! My untouched Carrara marble is crumbling

We just spent $1000 on "Made in Italy" honed Carrara marble tiles, 18x18. We picked out the pieces ourselves in the warehouse. They wrapped them up for us in the original boxes. Now that we're home and laying out the pieces, we're noticing that almost every single piece is chipped at the edge and that when you rub that spot with your fingernail, dust and crumbs fall off. There were no chips in the warehouse. These slabs are meant to be used for bathroom floors and walls. They are stamped with 'Made in Italy' on the side but now I'm wondering if we got fakes. They were on sale from $30 to $10 a square foot, we thought we just got lucky. Help! Did I buy inferior marble?
