Tile people..am I being too picky
Comments (10)Needsleep, What I find is that it is easy to worry too much ... sometimes I suffer from the same malady, only to learn that things work out pretty well in the end. What seems like a BIG offender today, lessens greatly in importance next month, like never remembering that chip was there on that tile in the doorway once it was grouted. I kept thinking as I was reading everyone's posts, that I would rather a small chip covered by grout rather than risk someone removing a chipped tile and nicking my heated floor mats in the process. THAT would be a much bigger problem because my brand spankin' new heated floors would not work! It's a kind of 'pick your battles' kind of thing. I think that we are all somewhat guilty of wanting to be 'nice' and not get in the workmen's way. What I try to do is avail myself of the information regarding the task at hand, and in my sweetest voice would have said, "Now, Tile Guy, are you planning to center the tile over the front of the surround, because it would make me REALLY happy if everything were nice and centered, right here in the front? Then bat your eyelashes. Works almost every time. But you gotta know your stuff, so that you can catch them BEFORE they 'booger' things up. :)) 'Would you do?' requests are a lot easier to grant that 'Would you RE-DO?' ones. Comments (36)We're done with the herringbone. This is the border on top of the running bond on the walls that he's having a problem with (figuring out how to cut it at - you guessed it - the crease again). He got one side and I can't figure out why he couldn't figure out the other side except that he's screwing with me. I really don't get it. I also bit my tongue until it bled but after the third question today that was basically "help me figure out how to lay tile" I "slipped" and told him that I can't explain to him how to do his job and the only way I could figure it out is to get up there and mess with it and just do it. I told him to go take a lunch break while I did that and he said he doesn't take lunch and grabbed his stuff and stormed out. I don't think the herringbone messed him up per se - I was explicit about that from the beginning and he was okay with it. At this point I think he was just asking me every stupid question to make some kind of a point, like "okay smart@ss, you figured out the ceiling, now figure THIS out." I really TRIED to be patient but I just wasn't seeing the problems he was seeing. It sounded like he was making a mountain out of every molehill he could possibly find. Maybe he was just looking for an excuse to walk out on the job when it was obvious that he wasn't going to get done in one day like he wanted to. I really don't know. I don't get people sometimes. There is so little left, I'm wondering if I can work with my contractor to finish it up. He's done some tile before, he's just slow and this job was just too big and complicated for him. At this point so little is left i can't imagine any real tile guy coming in to do it. Part of me wants to do it myself but after how hard it was to do the part I did do, there is no way DH is going to allow a repeat of that. I think grouting it all will be a bigger deal than setting the rest of the tile....See MoreBackslash - Am I being unreasonable?
Comments (66)Romy, They are the nicest crackle tiles I have seen. The saleswoman said she would NOT order me silver, as too often came with blue tones. The Cameo is on the other board, and has a green undertone. It is definitely not yellow, nor are my countertops (predominantly grey). I'm not sure it is best match for my cabinets, and if I can figure out how to get some decent photos, I'll post separately. I just love the crackle over the glass tiles I've been shown. If I could do it all again, I'd shop BS first, and then find a quartz countertop that lets the BS shine. In your last picture, the silver looks dark, and I know it isn't. It is truly lovely. What I have learned from you is that I will order several extra sheets. If some tiles look too dark/off color, I can have extras to replace....See MoreTile work AM I BEING TOO PICKY?!?!
Comments (47)as long as you haven't picked marble for around the toilet, or in their shower, you're fine. make it porcelain or glass. I have a boy and he can do a number on that bathroom. I have porcelain tile on the floor and glass tiles on the tub surround. You want something easy to clean disinfect for the floor,,especially around the toilet. because lets face it, teenage boys don't care about mess when they urinate! a marble floor would be an etched nightmare with males. (you may want to inform your husband for your own floor and tile!) as for white grout,,,I'd do gray in a shower. and I'd make sure to do the stain proof grout everywhere. FlexColor CQ is just that....See MoreJason Morgan
