what color trim to use with SW Alabaster

jenwinston73

Hi - I saw an old thread with this question but there were so many responses, I couldn’t find the answer to the original question. I’m considering painting my walls throughout the house with Sherman Williams Alabaster White. We will be getting Coretec LVP floor Calypso Oak. Hopefully this combo works well...of course still open to suggestions on wall paint colors. But my question is, if I go with SW Alabaster, what is a trim color that will go well with it. Would this trim color be the same color we’d want to paint our white kitchen and bathroom cabinets also? I feel like mixing whites can get a bit complicated. I want to find colors that compliment each other and don’t make one look more yellow or blue.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

@jenwinston73 I'm also looking at Calypso Oak and Alabaster for the walls. Have you installed it? I think I've seen you on other discussion boards talking about the same flooring choices I was looking at.

What color trim and ceiling with SW Alabaster White Cabinets

    Q

    Comments (1)
If it were my house, I would match the trim to the cabinets. The ceiling color would depend on the wall color, height of the room, amount of natural light, and maybe some other factors. I like to see a colored ceiling when there is crown molding.

Has anyone used SW Alabaster trim with SW Natural Choice walls?

We used SW Natural Choice on walls, and BM Cloud White on trim (a warm white) but use what you love or paint a small area and see what you think. In our house the natural choice leans very slightly green.....we used 2/3 strength in the rest of the house, except for the dining room.....we live in high desert and low humidity....which can affect how colors look! Here is 2/3 strength of natural choice with cloud white trim Here is full strength natural choice with cloud white trim.

Which color faux wood blinds for SW Alabaster trim?

We just change our trim and doors color to SW Alabaster. We love it....the dilemma now is that we need to update the blinds. Currently they are "Alabaster", they go well with the "Wool Skin" color trim, but not so much with Alabaster. Anyone out there found the perfect faux wood blinds' color for their Alabaster trim? Thank you.

Hi Jen B. - we have not installed it yet as our construction project is moving at a snails pace. But I did get a box of Calypso in and I like it. So we are going to install it. It should be soon (at least for a portion of the house- we are doing it in phases). We decided to go with SW Pure White instead of Alabaster. I was worried about some of the comments regarding North facing rooms looking “blah”...ha! We think Pure White looks nice and seems to have just a touch of grey in it.

Thank you for the response! That's funny about the paint because we are deciding between pure white, alabaster, and simply white. Do you have any pictures of it laid out? I have seen pictures where it looks very pale and then some where it looks rustic and light brown. The only sample I have is really small and doesn't give a good idea. Did you have any others you were considering?

Below are different pictures of Calypso that I've seen online. Do any of these look similar to what you see in person?

I’d say it’s mostly like the 1st or 2nd one. I recommend buying a box when you are almost certain which color you want to go with. Unfortunately we aren’t able to put it up next to the newly painted walls yet but I think the white walls will make a difference. The other one I really liked was Provenza Sweet Talker. My husband didn’t like the dark pieces though. From Coretec Noble Oak was another contender. I’ll post a close up photo of the sample floor because we currently have reddish wood flooring andvit really throws off the color of Calypso.

I should note that this room is a little darker and the walls are not painted white yet. So you will get a varied shade depending on lighting.

@jenwinston73 Thank you for posting a pic (I love the pug in it!) The 1st picture looks a lot like the picture you posted. Sweet Talker was my original choice and the floor that made me want to get LVP but I didn't like the amount of variation between planks. I looked at Noble Oak but it seemed even paler than Calypso. As far as color, do you know how sweet talker compares to calypso? Is one warmer or more yellow, etc? I plan to get a box but just want to make sure it's the right color before trying it out.

Haha! Yes we figure the pug fur will blend right in! Here’s a photo of sweet talker and Calypso. Please keep in mind our lighting right now is not good. The walls, floor, and lighting give it all an orange tint. We will have the white walls and bright LED lights which should make a huge difference.

The long pieces are Calypso. Calypso is very similar to the light pieces in sweet talker. That’s probably the darkest it gets. But there are a few pieces that are slightly lighter. The color variation is definitely not as drastic as with sweet talker. In person I don’t notice orange or yellow in Calypso. It just comes out like that in our pictures. I see little amounts of grey in there too. The Provenza has even more grey though, especially in the dark pieces.

It looks REALLY yellow in this photo. I shouldn’t have even posted that because it definitely looks nothing like that. I can probably take a better one for you in the daylight.

Adding a flash helps a little bit...still doesn’t do it justice. I think the red existing floor throws things off a little too.

@jenwinston73 Thank you so much for posting the pics of Calypso and Sweet talker! I went back to the floor store today to look at Noble Oak, Hayes Oak, and Ravenwood. Noble looked super light and Hayes looked like a gray-white...nothing like the pics online. They didn't have Ravenwood and I really want to see it before making my final choice. I think we'll get a box of Calypso to checkout. I saw colors I liked from Karndean and Adura but haven't heard good things about their stuff.

@Jen B. - we looked at Hayes too. There was a photo online that I saw that I loved. But it turns out that it has a pinkish tint. That was the feedback I got from the people at the store who had seen it installed. To me, Calypso is warm with a little bit of grey. I can’t remember if I looked at Ravenwood. It sounds like we have considered the same colors. I liked Waddington too, but it was maybe a little to red. The only thing that I wish were different about Calypso is I wish it were longer and I like 9” wide planks. But that was all secondary to the color. It was really hard for us to finally find one we both liked! Good luck and keep me posted. If I can get any better photos I will send to you. Also if we get ours installed before you make your decision, I will share.

  • Jen B.

@jenwinston73 I think we have the same taste haha! I wish Calypso was 9 inch too. I also thought theWaddington undertone was too orangy-red in my house. I love the look of sweet talker the most but it's too much variation. I feel a little better knowing you were looking for the same thing and went with Calypso. I was going to check out one more brand then order a box of Calypso. Did you ever look at Karndean Korlok? Warm Ash, Texas White Ash, and Washed Butternut look nice but they don't have a bevel and I don't know much about the brand. I also want to find a sample of Ravenwood somewhere. I'll definitely keep you posted. Please send pics when you get your floors done. I'd love to see it with the white walls!

@Jen B. We looked at all of the brands. I don't remember why we didn't like the Karndean. If I recall correctly, that is one of the original brands. But if you say they don't have the bevel, that might have been the issue for us. Also, are they the kind that you have to glue down? I saw some that were and we didn't want that kind. Calypso and Sweet Talker were the closest to what we were trying to achieve. I hope I feel the same once it is installed. I'm a bit obsessed with the photos I see on Instagram. I'll share the photos once I have it installed. Unfortunately, it is looking like that will be after the new year. Everything is taking so long and we have install windows and final coat of paint prior to installing the floor. It's a waiting game and I don't like it! I want to see them installed now... but I have to wait :( The good news is that we had a different floor picked out about 1 year ago. It was Republic and was very rustic looking. I thought I wanted that. Since everything was taking longer than it was supposed to, it gave me time to change my mind. I am thankful for that!

  • Jen B.

@jenwinston73 I definitely understand the frustration of having to wait. My husband will be installing the floors after we paint. We have a 1 and a 2 year old so finding the time and energy to do all the work is so hard. He still needs to put up our new light fixture and we want to install recessed lighing. We bought the house a month before we had our 2nd child and it's taken us a year to get to the point of decorating... if only I could pick things out. The Karndean do snap together. We don't want glue since they're going over hardwood floors (our current floors are a glossy espresso color that never look clean). I think Karndean doesn't have as good of a reputation but the floors I want to check out are from their new line, so there aren't many reviews unfortunately....or pictures. The pictures make such a difference when weeding out choices! I love most of the pictures of Calypso but since I've seen it look so different in every pic I can't get a feel for what it will look like here. I need to get a box for sure. I think Coretec and Provenza look the most authentic in pictures but I still want to check out the Karndean. I think they have a "kissed" edge but I prefer the bevel. Looking forward to seeing your's installed!

@Jen B - have you checked out Halfway Wholeistic’s profile on Instagram? If not, check it out. She has the Calypso/SW Pure White combo. I asked her previously what white wall paint she was using.

@jenwinston73 Thank you! I just posted to ask for help picking between Sweet and Ravenwood but those pictures makes me love Calypso again! I don't have a large sample of it but that would probably help a ton to see a full plank next to the other choices.

@Jen B - yes I’m obsessed with the photos she posts. I want to copy everything she has...ha! Those 2 colors you posted on the other thread look great also. If we weren’t so close to ordering Calypso, I’d have to check those out too. My contractor says he’s coming over today to measure the floor so we can put the order in soon. So we are getting close! I’ll comment on the other thread.

Yes, Jen B. I’m interested in finding out what you picked! We love the look of our floors but it still looks like a construction zone over there so I can’t really share any great photos yet.

@jenwinston73 DO they show footprints? Thats one of my hesitations after reading reviews about Coretec. I havent read that Calypso Oak specifically has the issue though

Jennifer P - I have not noticed footprints but because the construction is still happening on that side of the house (and there is dust), I don’t walk around without shoes. I think that is part of it. I’m sure as with other floors, when the sun hits it in a specific way, you’ll likely see more prints. From what I’ve read, you have to be very careful with what you use to clean the floors. Certain products will leave a residue and thus pickup more prints etc. I don’t have experience with that yet.

@jenwinston73 - Hi, will you be able to tell me where exactly you got those long samples of Calypso oak? I got samples from Coretec website, but they are small pieces. Would love to get a long plank.

I picked up a sample board at a flooring store. It’s still hard to tell with that size but better than the little square. When you are close to making a decision, you should buy 1 box and lay it around.

Also - I found that Costco sells calypso oak. The website allows you to see what it looks like in your house. I don’t know if other sites have this option but when I was deciding, I didn’t see anything like this for Calypso Oak.
