? Patio with full stone slab?

Hi talents,
This may sound naive. But, here it goes.
If we cut the grass really short and try to level up the ground a little bit (if needed), could we put a quartz/granite/marble slab on top of it and make it a patio? We don't use it very often but love the look/uniqueness. All inputs are much appreciated

Hi lfreshw ,

Starting big, expensive house projects can be daunting and sometimes simply finding a starting point or knowing what question to ask can be daunting.

The answer to your question is a resounding "NO" however.

In order to do this project, you need a level surface, perhaps with a slight tilt for drainage, sand and membrane put down before your pavers.

We just did our patio/yard this summer.

Do it right and enjoy your patio, do not put expensive marble on top of grass because you think it looks pleasing, otherwise this will be lipstick on a pig.

Would try and discourage you from installing flagstone, especially with mortar, over a patio that is cracked and separated. If you mortar and the crack widens or deepens it will cause separation of the flagstone above. If you mortar or glue just the edges and set the middle in sand it may work for a short time but will almost assuredly disappoint you later, with the same 1/4 section that is now sunken, progressing in its failure. The 'best practice' in this situation is to fix the underlying problem which is the existing patio itself. Fixing probably means removing the patio and re-pouring a new one before you would apply any material topically. Good luck!

Thank you Sina. Although I dislike grout or cleaning it, I’m hesitant to go with the LG full slab because, although it is the more practical route for me, it feels like a very safe (and boring ??) route. I’m not trying to be super trendy but a part of me feels it should have a little more pizzaz by adding that herringbone pattern......ahhhh. Bouncing back and forth. It doesn’t help that I haven’t seen many pictures of people using LG as a backsplash...maybe it’s not a popular decision for a reason?!?? Sorry! I’m just thinking out loud.....

KOH and NHBabs, thanks for your comments. I'm attaching a picture of the existing backyard. You can see the rock path curving around and meeting the patio to the right. The concrete extends in a walkway from that patio to the back gate and past the back door, out to the driveway. To the extreme left is the carport and garage, which form the side boundary of the yard. As for the use of the patio, there will be a pergola covering it (denoted in blue), and a hot tub and a place to put two chairs and a small propane fire pit. Not much scooting back and forth of chairs will be going on. (The grill and trampoline pictured will be relocated.) Here is a ROUGH diagram of what I've been playing with... slightly altering the stone path and the bed that it confines to extend out and over to a poured-in-place paver patio with the same crushed granite between the pavers. I've been playing around with lots of different iterations. I think I'd probably have less of a curve downward with the rock/gravel path and make it wider where it meets the patio so that it forms a more organic shape. The thing I can't rectify in my mind is the juxtaposition of rectangular concrete and natural stone. Since I have a rectangular concrete patio already, and don't want to have to resurface it, I'd like to marry the two types of surfaces. I'm just not sure if I'm approaching it the best way.

Christy: You want that gap filled with Axiom Translucent White silicone available at www.danidesigns.com The appropriateness of your backsplash is determined by your appliance manufacturer's installation instructions, not by blanket statements. Natural stone and stainless steel are noncombustible, but can suffer damage from heat.

No. The slab must be embedded such that its sides are covered with earthen material. A lot of what you can, or can't, do depends on the thickness of the slab and the base that's under it. A thin slab or a topsoil base will tend to rock/move when walked on. A thick slab on a tamped subsoil of correct type of granular base will remain firm. My suggestion is that you do it the proper way (install a tamped base, use proper thickness slabs, and tamp the whole thing down at the end. Edging grass is maintenance chore. Do you really want to do it around each individual stab? I'd look into artificial turf as a material for that purpose. It would be easier to live with.

Maybe but not a counter top slab, if that is what you are thinking. Nothing polished (too slick when wet) and, for sure, not manufactured 'quartz'. And the sod needs to be removed.

A whole lot depends on where you live, the drainage situation and soil conditions and other factors (like trees).
