Undercounter oven that won't break my back
Comments (11)There was a good thread on this called "If Miele breaks the budget...". I'm posting what Mindstorm said because I can't say it any better. She loved her Bosch 700 but thought it wasn't on the market. However, you might be able to get it on eBay or Craigs List. From Mindstorm: I have a Bosch oven. My two finalists were the Miele Novotronic and the Bosch 700. I eventually chose the Bosch for a variety of reasons (price difference between those two was small at the time - perhaps about $200 if that). I absolutely ADORE my Bosch oven - just I as I know I would have the Miele (I've cooked with them and really like them). My oven is dead-on precise in temperature, very responsive, very even and I love its convection functions. BUT that was then. If I were in those shoes today I would not get a Bosch on the market today; I would suck up the couple misgivings I had about the Miele 27" and go with it. I wouldn't bother with ELectroluxs and GEs and KAs and whatever else. Here's the reason - I have my Bosch installed undercounter also. The Bosch 700 ovens (the one I have that is no longer on the market so probably not an option for you) as well as the 27" Mieles are about 24" TALL. That means that you can install it just under teh counters about 6" above the bottom of the cabinet. That 6" makes a world of difference - you can get a drawer under the oven and furthermore, you won't be kneeling on the floor to get things in and out of it. Here's a link to a picture of mine - hopefully you can see what I mean. Its a very practical 5 or 6"! Now the new Bosch as well as all these others are full 30" tall ovens and personally I think they are all dreadfully awkward for an under cabinet installation. Only the Miele 27" has retained these sensible dimensions so if I may be so bold, I'd say to you that your options for an UC installation are - well, the Miele 27" w/ self-clean or the Miele 27" w/o self-clean ;-)...See MoreGE Oven Won't Stay Lit
Comments (6)If you haven't done so already, you might reset the breaker. Even a 15 year old GE range has a control board and it's possible it's just out of wack from an electrical jolt. Leave the breaker off for about 30 seconds. That's where I'd start - always try the easy and free stuff first. The oven igniter or the relay for the oven may need replacement. Get spouse to lift the oven floor, maybe also take off the drawer and take a look around. He should be able to watch the ignition sequence. It might help. When our 7 year old profile died, we did that - found a bad igniter with burnt wiring and rusted out areas around it down there. That's when the repair started to be pretty expensive. If yours isn't burnt, the igniter is pretty inexpensive and an easy surgery. It's just as likely that the control board is dying and you need a new one. I've never done that kind of surgery, at 15 years old, it's pretty much due though. I always laughed at a relative's jennaire. She spends about $500 every year to replace its board. Just so you know, this is pretty much the entirety of what I know. I got through most of life cooking on old ranges with pilot lights - crap, but I never had a range repaired until this year....See MoreSingle Oven/Advantium or single oven with microwave drawer
Comments (5)I love this subject. As much as I love the look and performance concept of two ovens, I can't commit the space or resources. Here is what we are doing: 1 wall oven (probably monogram) 1 krups fbc-4 toaster oven (there are many reviews on amazon) 1 microwave, plain for now, but may upgrade to panasonic genius prestige convection microwave based on needs. 1 solar oven (not sure what model yet) Why am I doing this? Like many people, once in a while I could really use two ovens, but it's not a frequent need. My toaster, which I love, has a convection oven feature that works well. It does great brownies, pies, and small cakes/side dishes. It fits my largest diameter (10.5 inch o.d.) pie dish easily. The rectangular inner dimensions are 12" w x 11" d, with nearly an inch bumpout in depth in the back, but I would leave that open for air flow. Anyway, what I learned this thanksgiving (I never paid attention before because I wasn't designing a kitchen) is that the turkey and the pies bake at vastly different temperatures, so I did need another oven for the holiday. But, the toaster oven fit the bill. I figured, if I could make it through thanksgiving on this setup, I could get through just about anything that might come my way. So, I am going with this combo. As the years go by and the number of bakers in my kitchen grow, I can upgrade my microwave to a convection unit if necessary too, but since I'm doing freestanding, I won't have to change my cabinets. I just wanted to mention the toaster oven, because when you're using it as an additional oven, you still get the use of your microwave. So, that's 4 baking options, 5 if you count our bread machine, all without a double wall oven. Not a solution for everyone but I thought it might be worth mentioning. If you click around in the links, some of the information about the use of solar ovens in refugee camps is heartening, and gives me hope for the future of the world. It's worth it to me, both in terms of electricity saved, and in setting an example for my kids, to master the use of the solar oven. Plus it doesn't take up any space in my kitchen or make it hotter in the summer! Here is a link that might be useful: More and more solar oven options out there...See MoreWhich Microwave Drawer has a control panel facing up?
Comments (27)Haha...I guess having 3 types of appliances isn't a big deal. We are getting close to having to order our cabinets. After thinking about it over night, I think I will go with the Sharp drawer. I can fix the excessive beeping, and as phooneycat says, the drawer taking 3 seconds to open is not that much. About as long as it would take me to get a spoon. Does the door open automatically when done? I had asked about an upper microwave cabinet and now realize that it would have to be wider than the 13" width that I would have. Which means a wider base down to the counter top. I don't want to lose that counters top space, so we are back to a drawer. It's funny, because when we started out planning our house, and kitchen, I said that the one thing I would not have is a drawer microwave. It's nice that most of you love the microwave drawers. ;) The plus side of having the drawer is easy accessibility should DH or I become wheelchair bound at some point. We are building close to a ADA compliant home as we can, or feel comfortable with, for this stage in our life. We are 63 and 68 and are aging in place with our last home. Thank you all again!!!...See Morescottie mom
