Comments (3)My rift and quartered was supposed to be 60-70% rift and the rest quartered. I have under 10% quartered, which doesn't bother me -- I would have ordered all rift, but R & Q was significantly cheaper. What I didn't like was that there is a lot of flat sawn appearance. The boards may show some rift, but some boards show a lot more cathedral than rift. Also, there were a significant number of shorts under the 12" minimum, quite a number of boards discarded for bad milling, etc. I had ordered 10% more than my installer would normally order (so I could be picky), but had to order even more, and still had to use boards that should have been used for kindling wood. My service/delivery/etc. from Hurst Hardwoods was fine, but I should have paid another $1.40/sq ft and bought the material locally....See Morequarter sawn white oak kitchen cabinets ...... how to judge quality?
Comments (5)End panels look like laminate. Fine, if they are getting field applied decorative panels. Integrated decorative end panels are far preferred. These look unfinished. That by itself is also another big red flag. They haven’t been sanded enough. And do not have enough mils of whatever ENS is. And I’m familiar with a whole lot of finish coatings, and I never heard of that. But the biggest red flag was right there at the first. . ”he buys the doors from a factory”. You never end up with matching woods from boxes to doors to faceframes. Because none of it comes from anywhere close in geography. OK, I looked up ENS. It is not a cabinet coating. Its an exterior coating that looks similar to Thompson’s water seal. Totally unsuitable for hardwearing need to be stain resistant indoor cabinets. It doesn’t DO much of anything. Exterior ptofucts with mildewcides or fungicides should not be used indoors. Nor should they be adjacent to food prep surfaces....See MoreRift sawn white oak cabinets pulling orange after clear coat
Comments (35)I think it looks awesome! It might not be exactly what you thought, but I think it may be a happy mistake. I gives a little contrast to the floor and a nice back drop for the island. I do agree with Anna - change that trim around the base of the island. That light color will look a mess in a very short time. Assuming you are trying to cover a gap, see if you can get a scribe molding or shoe molding. This looks like a quarter round. . Comments (11)Thanks, all. Conestoga doesn't do frameless, so they are out, amongst other reasons about their business workings, which I won't delve into but have made the news. H202, I suppose that is true in some situations, but there is no way standard dimensions can work for us without filler strips in many different locations. Raimondi and HU*, Doesn't sound like you are particularly familiar with the RTA market. Maybe true for 85% of the places, but there are some well produced cabinets coming out of places like barker, scherrs, conestoga - just have to find the right place. Millworkman - not necessarily. Cheap shops, yes, but the upper end RTA mfg's will go to 1/8" or 1/4" increments in multiple directions. Filler strips aren't going to work well in this situation... definitely need a mfg that can get to the nearest 1/4"....See MoreG & S Floor Service
