Palatine vs Pickering
Comments (16)I ignored this thread earlier today, but now (in a state of acute late Sunday evening ennui) I'm glad I opened it. Here's my 2 cents: After Palatine arrived on the scene sometime during the past 10 yrs or so, I was intrigued by references to the super-large plants they were sending. Several seasons passed before I finally placed my first Palatine order for five or six roses that I couldn't find elsewhere. When that Palatine order arrived, I was surprised first by the small size of the box, then by the modest size of the plants. They were quite comparable in size to plants I was accustomed to receiving from Pickering. After my initial disappointment, the obvious occurred to me: Pickering and Palatine use the same rootstock, are located in the same general area with basically the same conditions and the same short growing season. Their attention to care and cultivation appear to be comparable, so, given all those similarities, ofcourse their plants are going to be comparable. As for plants that "never even woke from dormancy", that describes one of the plants I received from Palatine -- 'Special Occasion', to be exact. Probably Palatine would have replaced it had I ever got around to notifying them. At the point in springtime when it becomes obvious that a non-starter is occupying space, there's always far too much else going on around here to stop and tend to tedious business. I've yet to re-order 'Special Occasion'. I really want to try growing that rose....See MorePalatine Roses updates 2018 online catalog!
Comments (15)Berrypie - you know the only cure for rose panic is to buy more roses (ask me how I know - smile). Same goes for you Bella Rosa - time to get that order expanded yet again. Thanks for the extra tips on great Palatine roses, Cindi. I didn't mention Crazy Love because all of you folks on GardenWeb bought out Palatine before I could get mine ordered last year (it's in my order this year though). Sunset Dreams is indeed fabulous already in its first year, and Beverly is also terrific. My Auguste Renoir is in a non-optimum spot so he sulks a bit, but the blooms are lovely. So here's what I ordered for this year (so far), some of which are replacing roses that didn't overwinter last year in an average spot and have earned a sunny spot upgrade: Alfred Sisley (replacement) - this one lasted about 5 years in an average spot then didn't come back this year Annie Davidson (replacement) Crazy Love Diane Loomer Emma Jaftl Honore de Balzac Karen Ann La Rose de Molinard (replacement) Midnight Mystique Oh Happy Day Red Intuition (replacement) Sonnenwelt Under the Cherry Moon Since that's an unlucky 13 I have another rose credit that I left up to Palatine to pick among some choices I gave them (Bliss, Kiss me Kate, Firebird Colorscape). I was hoping Dragon Heart would stay up on the listings since that would have been the 14th but they ended up pulling it. Wait till next year, I expect. Looking forward to seeing what you all picked. There's another similar thread circulating that is encouraging us all to support this great rose vendor. Cynthia...See MoreMy Regan order- late or never?
Comments (22)Sylvia , I’ve been super pleased with their service . Costco feels like a cattle herding service . So impersonal, no one ever ever helps or offers unless you stop them in their tracks . When I go to sams I am offered help to my car if my load seems big and if they don’t offer I ask and they are so happy to do so. Those bags of soil get so heavy after a while ! When I found the white pots , a girl had just cranked the pallet out from the back . I gasped and said oh my gosh how much are those ? She happily unwrapped them , scanned it , and went and got me a flat bed , loaded it for me and took it to the front since I had my baby in a cart ! That’s service !!! I love sams club !! Summers , they are popular in the south, or where when they were made !! I do follow someone in Ny who has the matching settee!! What a find . I’d be so thrilled if I found one . Here’s a snap of hers . There is some amazing garden inspiration on Instagram!...See MorePalatine orders
Comments (217)I think the reason for trimming canes and removing new growth is to protect the roses from desiccating. I read that after planting they need about 2 weeks to grow feeder roots and be able to absorb water. Until then, they use water that is in their canes, and active growth may use this water too quickly and weaken or even kill them. The roses I get from Palatine are always dormant and so I never trimmed the canes, but I did it with roses from Hortico that were actively growing when I received them: if the new growth was close to the top of a cane, I shortened these canes to cut it off, and if it was closer to the graft I just removed the white growth. Then I mounded them with soil. All these roses have grown very well....See Morekatyajini
