Comments (7)I'm not surprised that the preparer didn't know how to do all the different states and the farm. Most preparers aren't familiar with the "ins and outs" of the various states. It's enough to keep up with Federal and the local state tax law changes without thinking about keeping up with 49 other states. I've seen preparers with 30 years of experience step back from an unfamiliar state or tax situation and tell the client he needed to research something like a farm to insure the return is done correctly. There are probably very very few preparers who are experienced in all tax matters, forms, situations, etc. To expect a preparer to be very familiar with farms, Nebraska and Indiana when the preparer is in Ohio is unrealistic. Block, in some areas, has a person who specializes in the state tax returns. That person is a real expert. Hopefully, your daughter's return is being sent to an all states pro. Now for the farm, I've been doing taxes for 13 years (yes, some were working for Block). I might do one or two farms a year. In other areas of the country, preparers do farms every day so they are more familiar with them. I take my time doing farm returns because there are some twists (credits, different filing deadlines, etc.) that we just don't see every day. A good preparer will take time to research those items. It's a "I know what I don't know" situation. You might be familiar with farm returns or live in an area with many farms. It is quite possible that your daughter went to a preparer in an area that doesn't see farm returns very often. I'll do some research on the paid preparer required in Ohio issue. I've never heard of that one before your post. $280 for 2 state returns, a farm, a 1040, a Sch D, and either a education credit or tuition and fees deduction doesn't seem too far out of line. Comments (31)I misunderstood the original post, because I saw Real Estate I guess...I will admit to looking things up out of curiousity but I was also raised that any discussion of money outside the family was really inappropriate. I have trouble even talking about getting paid at work, and once went almost 5 months without a paycheck in one office, because I didn't want to talk about it. I think a lot of people have given up their own privacy and it has dragged the rest of us into it. I assume there is a satellite that knows where I am at all times and all my other info is out there, and that this information is tracked and sold for various purposes. My tenants all tweet and so I have seen pictures of people mooning on the roof of my (rented out)house, pictures of one of them passed out on the stairs, and references to the "r@pe room" (basement, which is a little creepy); and the "sl_t shack" (meaning the house in general when one of the girls is alone for the weekend.) It's all that twenty-something Northeast crude boy/girl humour and behavior, but instead of it being between friends, it is between a large group of cyber friends and anyone else who uses google. Oh - actually, it's part of a Guardianship as set by our particular Judge. It is not related to foreclosure - but the Judge wanted to be quite involved in overseeing the sale. My attorney has insinuated she is unique in her involvement. The original "Order to List and Sale" would have allowed it to be (obviously) listed and sold within the constraints which was identified in the order (i.e. range of sale price). This particular Judge lined out the "and Sale" - thereby giving me authority to list the house, but not sell it. Now, a separate "Order to Sell" needs to be petitioned when a contract is received that meets the list price range. I'm so frustrated by this situation - the house is being sold ASAP due to dwindling funds of the Ward. And, to petition the court for approal to "list and sell" has cost about $1000. By the Judge excluding the "to sell" stipulation, it costs an additional $500 for the additional petition/order. How is this fair? I am trying very hard not to have significant distrust and aversion to attorneys - but between this and some unfair dealing with divorce proceedings (of another family member), I am gaining suspicion of our legal system. Oh - and I hope I wouldn't reap penalty from giving my card number to another employee --- especially it was suggested that I do that by HR for another's travel/lodging reservation! Ha. Comments (60)We've always said it's never too late to post to a DAT, and I'm testing that theory. I've been working on this one since May. The house is another Oakland hills home, but definitely a nicer one than the one I previously posted. This one is on the uphill side of the road and so has an exterior elevation worth looking at. Here is a shot of the living area with the dining room in the background. The kitchen is through the door at the back of the dining room. The living room is all neutrals, but the kitchen walls are green and the bedrooms were all painted shades of blue, green and aqua. Here's the kitchen and the room past the peninsula: It looked to me as if the homeowner spruced up the kitchen for sale by painting the cabinets white and putting in new black counters. But the black and white seem too stark to me compared to the rest of the house, and with the large west-facing window, the kitchen gets a LOT of light, and it just makes the black and white more stark. Now, if I really bought this house, I would probably live with the kitchen indefinitely. This design is more about what I thought the homeowners should have done if they were staying, and I riffed off their design choices elsewhere in the house. I wanted the kitchen to be a bit softer, and transitional between the neutrals of the public spaces and the water colors of the rest of the house. The cabs read a bit pinker than I wanted; I was going for a creamy neutral. I took out the uppers on the outside wall and the suspended cabinets over the peninsula. I left the layout the same otherwise, including the cooktop on the peninsula, however questionable that may be, although if it is feasible (couldn't tell) I would look to moving it to the interior wall. The adjacent space beyond the peninsula looks like it was intended as a breakfast nook but with the dining room and peninsula seating already, more space for eating seemed like overkill. Since the deck is off that room, it seemed like it would be nice to have a space that worked for indoor/outdoor entertaining. So I turned it into living space. What I wanted to do, but didn't have enough energy to do a board for, would be to do a wet bar at the far end of the room, behind where the white loveseat is. The room also has what looked to me like mirrored closet doors, which I replaced with something I liked better. So below I did board for the window wall, a view of the peninsula, and the living area facing the interior wall.
