Should we paint new garage door?
Comments (5)We too are considering painting our (white) rollup garage doors. They are an insulated metal/ vinyl construstion. Our house trim is a medium grey, so we are thinking about a lighter shade of grey for the doors. We have seen this treatment applied to other homes in our area (California high desert- SS zone 11) and it can look quite attractive when the colors are chosen tastefully. We have not done it yet because of concerns with longer-term appearance of the paint. Our doors get hot to the touch in the summer and judging by the house paint durability, we expect that the usual latex outdoor paint will not be up to the task. Small patches of peeling trim on the house are not usually noticeable; on a garage door with white undercoat those peeling/chipped areas will stand out sharply. I still need to paint the trim every three years- regardless of the paint manufacturer's stated warranty. I don't relish doing the garage doors too. I have not found a paint (in the shade we are looking for) that is specifically designed for this application. If we lived in a milder climate, I would have already done it. Just my $.02 worth. - Paul Paul...See MoreWhat color should we paint the front door?
Comments (16)I think the fade potential comes from two things; whether the color is from natural earth pigments or chemical pigments (earth is the most stable) Where synthetic colorant is mixed with earth pigments is probably where the biggest surprises can happen. And is the vehicle of the paint itself is of the highest quality, is will have more UV blockers and not subject the colorant to as much exposure. The UV resistance fades over time, but front doors seem to get recoated on an accelerated schedule anyway. My anecdote is from the next town over; they painted their imposing brick Victorian city hall a dark wine red, and it has now faded to a dusty plum ! Comments (8)If you are talking about real wood think about maintenance. We had a stained mahogany door at our previous house. The sun did a number on it and it had to be redone yearly. It was even under a covered porch but the front of the house faced east and the sun still came under the porch and torched half of the door. Went with a painted door in current house and the front faces west and the door still looks good. It is under a porch as well. As beautiful as wood doors are I would not do one again....See MoreWhat color should we paint/stain our deck?
