All white kitchen cabinets or white perimeter w/stained peninsula
Comments (20)romy718, Yes, sister's concern is about the durability or upkeep of a wood top. I live alone and really don't have much company, so I'm not worried about that. I really haven't decided on perimeter counter tops yet. I doing one thing at a time. Anytime I've planned anything to the smallest detail it usually doesn't work for me. So I start with one piece and add to it. I really don't have anything on my must have list for the kitchen. What is your ceiling height in your kitchen? Majra, thanks for your advice. I have an idea for my floors, but not the exact shade except it's going to be on the darker side. Currently the kitchen has a wood floor and my entry which is directly opposite the kitchen has a tile floor. I'm going to do hardwood in both this time. I'm also re staining my oak staircase and changing out the handrail and balusters in an antique nickel to something similar to the attached picture....See MoreDoes anyone do white cabinets and white island anymore?
Comments (14)i actually think the trend of white cabs/stained island will end up being dated sooner than later....that said I'm still considering it for the practicality of the island being the busiest part of the kitchen with seating on one side and sink/dw/trash on the working side. I think it will help keeping the island looking better longer than if I had white all over. Still prefer the look of white/white overall....See MoreCalling all owners of white (painted) cabinets!!! Comments (27)For what it's worth, while we don't have white cabinets, we have white everything else in our house---all painted with BM oil-based paint. I spent this weekend battling with it to try to get some spots patched---got new paint, same color, in water-based. Big mistake---different finish, different color! Happily I managed to dig up one last can of oil-based in the basement. I'd go with oil-based or lacquer for kitchen cabinets. So I can say: - Oil-based *does* yellow. Unfortunately for us, we love the yellowed color since it turns the shade into a creamy white---the original mix is too white! Oh, well. - The oil-based finish is (I think) easier to clean and wipe down. I couldn't get the water-based to a finish I was happy with. - White does show dirt, which is probably really only an issue if you have kids and/or pets. Our dog is the biggest offender because he likes to rest his head on window sills, and those get gross. Less of an issue in the kitchen, though. I wipe it down in the problem spots periodically, and occasionally put some touchup paint on. - If the paint chips, you can sometimes see the patch if you look closely. I don't think it's that big a deal, though. - The adjustment thing depends in part on your house and your climate. We do have problems with some of our doors and casework, but it's mostly as a result of an old house settling and things swelling in rainy season, not of the paint per se. (My parents have similar issues in New England with their stained inset cabinets from a relatively costly custom cabinet company.) We're still getting flush inset in the kitchen though---we just know what to watch for. A good cabinetmaker should be able to do flush inset with clearances that will accommodate that with minimal adjusting. We did go with frameless for our most frequently used cabinets for that reason, though. Hope that helps somewhat!...See MoreWhite perimeter cabinets and walnut stained island..
Comments (20)When I was making my final decisions I almost went with white perimeter and white island with a wood stained counter on the island to set it off. I think that's a pretty look too. I got some design advise that lead me to doing a natural cherry island with a counter that matched the white perimeter cabinets. I'm very happy with the result. I do think the island takes the most abuse and it's definitely hidden better by the cherry. Also like the quartz counters. With little kids they just feel less worrisome to me. I really don't think it's a look that will go out any sooner than the rest of the kitchen will....See MoreKali Barker
