Oil Rubbed Bronze Lighting Fixtures Mixed with Black Cabinet Hardware?

Hi everyone,

So our kitchen is is going to have white cabinets with a white marble style quartz countertop. We are leaning towards Restoration Hardware oil rubbed bronze Obrit lighting fixture over our island and breakfast area.

The wife is okay with that color to give it a bit of contrast but she wanted to go with black hardware on the cabinets so we can give it a bit of contrast.

I figure since the fixtures are higher up and also a darker shade they should be okay to mix with the black hardware.

Thoughts?

Yes, no one can look at both and take the time to be picky about it lol. You will be the ones who notice things more than anyone. And after the dust settles most of the time you wont even think about it anymore. Side note I dont think you need contrast on your cabinet pulls, a brushed brass would be really pretty with bronze..just a thought.

Thank you sprtphntc...gorgeous color cabinets-kitchen. In your 1st photo,(upclose) the hardware looks totally pewter or matt silver though not ORB...Can you explain...As I need rich very dark (but not black)ORB matte real iron/metal. I initially though matte black to go with our handmade black custom potrack, wroight iron stair wells etc..and not be matchy matchy with hardware but the black didn't look good with my sample wood and so I'll have no contrast but go with dark ORB. LOVE the look. I am so thankful I found this page/thread..Apparently I'm not doing what is the trend but I go with what I love which tends to be timeless IMHO, traditional with rustic leanings.

A quick search on Houzz will show lots of pictures with mixed finishes. The first two below have ORB light fixtures and chrome/brushed nickel plumbing fixtures and cabinet hardware. The last picture has chrome plumbing fixtures and ORB light fixtures and cabinet hardware. IMO all these combinations look good. I am typically a "matchy/matchy" person but wanted chrome plumbing fixtures in my house and prefer ORB light fixtures to chrome light fixtures for some reason. So I have spent hours looking at pictures with mixed finishes and reading design blogs/home building forums and have come to the conclusion that there are no "rules" on this and it is really a matter of personal taste.

Personally I think ORB is more timeless than black fixtures. I just finished remodeling and my hardware is mostly oil rubbed bronze with quite a bit of copper. I specifically chose ORB because it had copper highlights as part of the finish. I even bought old door knobs in an Art Deco style and had them refinished in an ORB finish. Since my remodel was inspired by Arts & Crafts/Prairie/Art Nouveau/William Morris with elements of Hollywood Regency LOL that it seemed more traditional was fine as the new fixtures I chose were deliberately not "modern" looking anyway. I didn't follow trends so I don't care whether I am on trend or not - resale didn't enter into my mind at all in terms of any of my choices.

I am dealing with this right now! We chose brushed nickel because getting matte black everywhere would cost like $7k(this would include all doors, lighting and kitchen/bathroom fixtures); our builder does offer brushed bronze for like $500 for everything. I don't like ORB personally so didn't want to get it just to get it. I do know people are mixing metals A LOT these days. Black matte with champagne brass or ORB with brushed nickel. We plan to change the guest bathrooms to matte black everything; yet the rest of our home will be brushed nickel, as far as the other doors and light fixtures(until we get the mooshie moosh to change them). Unless, everything is all the same throughout your home, mixing metals is going to happen. Exterior does not have to match interior. I would treat these as completely different spaces in regard to fixtures and or color choice(psst, black matte exterior/brush nickel interior for us because this is affordable at this time due to financial restraints). Will post pics in 1/2 months when completed. So, I guess the real question here is, do YOU like the look of mixed metals? :D

Our kitchen cabinets will be black and our countertops marble look. Our floors are dark wood. I want to hand oil rubbed pendants over our island and add barstools with wooden legs and black seats with nailhead trim. Everyone says the oil rubbed pendants won’t look right. Any suggestions?

@cjblackwelder you need to start your own post, and add pictures of the space. that being said I would either do an antique brass or a satin nickel so they stand off the dark cabinets.
