which type of paint should I use to update my doors and trim

Hello, I have a home built in 2005. The doors and trim were painted in an oil based paint (most likely BM satin Impervo). I would like to update the color from an antique buff to an off-white. Should I paint in another oil based paint or try these new water lines like BM advanced. BM folks are really pushing the advanced on me (saying all I have to do is scuff the wood first) but something tells me to stick with an oil.

Oil based paints were the go-to product for years but these days the water based paints are just are durable but much easier to use. Also, oil based paint will change color with age while waterbased paints will stay true to their original shade for decades. At our shop we recommend the Insl-x Cabinet Coat for kitchen cabinets, doors and trim. It dries quickly with no smell and cleans up with water. It cures to a very durable long lasting finish. It is still technically a Benjamin Moore umbrella product so you should be able to find it in a Benjamin Moore store. We tried the Advance and frankly were not very impressed. It develops that oil based smell after a day or so and stay soft for a long time. Additionally, it will also discolor with age - though not as much as the old fashioned oils. What is there must be primed first with BIN no matter what you do. Not impressed with Acvsnced. The cure time is too long.

awww, 1 yay, 3 nays. :( Thanks for the replies. It makes sense, that's why I asked. I just LOVE that look, think it goes so darn well w/my house. Thank you for the compliment, trini. We just love our place, bought it almost 2 years ago, is a fixer upper. Went from a townhouse to a full acre so we feel like we have a sprawling ponderosa! LOL. I know nothing of gardening/landscaping and plants (never had to) so I am loving this forum! Ok, would the bleeding heart be able to grow (away from the wall) over the garage? Like...3 pots, set away from the wall. One on the left of arch, one on the right of arch, one on right of garage door? What kind of structure (trellis?) would I use? please help me!

My doors and trim are/were about the exact same color. The floor molding was changed out when we had new tile installed so we now have the 5" white molding. I did most of the painting myself. I'm still working on the door trim molding and i think it looks great (the color, maybe not the workmanship-because I painted it myself and got a bit sloppy) The doors are remaining the same. It gives it a really nice contrast. Plus the doors would be a real pain to do.

You have a major aesthetic decision to make. Should all of the trim be painted or remain natural wood tone? What you don't want to do is mix them (painted door jamb/head trim with natural wood base along the walls). If this seems daunting, just consider it one room at a time. Good luck.

Semi-gloss. Same colour as your trim (doors, frames, baseboards) is usually what is done. Depends on where it is, what it is made of, and if you want it to be a focal point in the room. As for brand and line of paint - Aura semi gloss, Cloverdale Renaissance or Multi-master, SW all surface enamel.

What is BIN and why would I need to prime if painting oil over oil?

PPG's Break Through in Delicate White. Take a drawer or door to a pro PPG store and tell them what you want to do.

Advanced and SW's Pro Classic both have ridiculous dry times between coats. Break Through can be recoated in 2 hours.

Unlikely you'll need a primer - but, again, take a door/drawer to the store and get their input. Could be a waste of time depending on the paint store staff. You have a 50/50 shot with any store whether they know what they're doing or not.
