Kitchens Design Dilemma Flooring

Mixing tile flooring and laminate flooring

Is it ok to mix two different types of flooring? I am wanting to replace carpet in my downstairs with laminate. I can’t do the kitchen as well right now (that will be a full kitchen remodel). Later i want to run tile from the entryway and into the kitchen. There would be 2 transition from the laminate to tile. Is this something that is commonly done?

As long as the tile isn't a wood look, it's fine to mix tile and laminate. However, these days most people tend to prefer a single flooring throughout a home. Laminate is not a good choice for areas that get moisture such as bathrooms, kitchens, and entryways, so if you do want a single flooring use something like engineered hardwood or LVP.

If you go for the two flooring materials, make sure that the whole floor will be the same level. In other words, make sure you account for the height of the tile now when putting in the laminate so that you don't create a tripping hazard and think about how you would do handle the transitions.

Also, laminate floors tend to go through styles quickly, so I recommend buying some extra in case you need to patch or extend in the future.

Anna - that's TOTALLY what I was thinking about. Everything that is old is new again. Or can be made new again! Love those ideas. @ Patricia...I know you have amazing German-made laminate. That's a different ball park from the stuff most people know (ie. the other 99.99% of the population) as laminate. The European made laminates have some of the best HDF board ever made. Your stuff takes HUGE amounts of humidity before it puffs. And then all it needs is a bit of dry time before it snaps back into shape. Most people won't purchase the $4 - $7/sf laminates that handle moisture like your floors. To them, laminate is the cheap stuff for $0.79/sf at LL or HD. When I answer stuff about laminate, I assume the 'bad' stuff.

@ Marion...I'm glad you are embracing the floor. A professional stone restoration company can come in and give your floors a good scrub and a new layer of sealant. Just doing that can perk up these floors quite nicely. I'm not sure of the price range but I would be surprised if it cost more than $3/sf. As for the other floors, carpet does very well over them. It's what makes carpet unique among floor coverings (sigh...I know...so many people hate carpet...but Canadians have it everywhere). It is supple and easy to lay over odd surfaces like your floors. I also like it because it offers the SMALLEST floor height transition from one room to another. Like hallway - bedroom, etc. The adhesives can be dealt with when (if) you ever choose to uncover these floors and live on them again...until then I say go ahead and do what you need to do to enjoy your home.

Remove the tile, put in new oak that matches the width and species of what you have, sand and finish everything at once. Any hardwood flooring company can do this.

What type of climate is this property in? Tile is common in hot climates. LVP is frequently used in rentals in other locations. Are you replacing all the flooring or just some of it? If it's not a total replacement, show us a picture of what will be left that you need to match. Unless it's a low dollar rental you will want to keep the aesthetics in mind.
