Most Americans Now Have an Unfavorable View of the Democratic Party, A Flip From 2018

The blue wave in 2018 was undeniable (by everyone, seemingly, except President Donald Trump. Democrats gained 41 seats in the House and lost just two in the Senate — despite facing an overwhelmingly unfavorable map. But with the presidential candidates in the spotlight, the Democratic party’s approval numbers appear to be taking a bit of a dive.

A column in The New York Times Tuesday cited a Pew Research Center survey which found that Americans currently hold an unfavorable view of the Democratic party. According to the poll, 45 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of the Democrats, compared with 52 percent who hold an unfavorable view. Those numbers mirror the Republican party exactly. The GOP also stands at 45-52 in those metrics.

Last September, ahead of the 2018 midterms, the numbers told a different story. Fifty-three percent of Americans had a favorable opinion of Democrats prior to the election, compared to 42 percent who had an unfavorable opinion. Republicans, meanwhile, boasted just a 43 percent favorable number, with 52 percent unfavorable.

Will these numbers hold until next November? And if so, how will they translate at the ballot box?

The first thing that comes to my mind as a possible cause of this is the performance of "the squad".

LOL, I TOLD THEM WE SAW THEM!

Thing is, the electorate is too. As I knew they would.

Keep it up, it's working great, isn't it?

Green New Deal, AOC, BETO, angry but wealthy socialist Bernie, fired up but socialist says she's a capitalist wealthy Warren, LIES about President Trump, Russia Russia Russia, makes you wonder if there's a conservative making decisions at CNN and MSNBC and at the Democrat Party Headquarters!

Maybe LIttle Debbie is a double agent.

Great news.

The title of your post would be just as accurate if it read--

Most Americans Now Have an Unfavorable View of the Republican Party

As the OP notes, BOTH parties rank below 50%.

"According to the poll, 45 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of the Democrats, compared with 52 percent who hold an unfavorable view. Those numbers mirror the Republican party exactly. The GOP also stands at 45-52 in those metrics."

Oh, but all we are bombarded with is how unpopular Repblicans are, how Donald Trump will NEVER be reelected (and how he won't finish his first term) and how it's only a few that support him and how great the Democrats are because they care so much about people they want to give them everything, redistribute, the party of caring.

They are the party of ME ME ME "I'll decide what's best for you" and the new polls show that the electorate is not fooled.

People don't generally trust political parties.

Who could blame them?

Now we know Democrats are on notice.

But back to the Squad of Four, Green New Deal, open borders, Medicare for ALL, Medicare for non citizens illegal aliens, eliminating debt and forgiving all student loans, free college for losers and professional students, waiting lines for all for healthcare, waiting long terms for surgery so an illegal alien can get their treatment first, control of education, confiscation of guns, etc.

Back to that winning agenda!

Meh, it's a typical cycle. Right now, the Democrats are trying to appeal to other Democrats so they can win the primary, so they are going more progressive. Once we have a nominee, he or she will become a little more moderate to address and appeal to the general public.

It happens every election for both parties.

I think these numbers will continue to change. The green new deal, gun confiscation, free everything. When everyday Americans, and not political junkies like most of us who post here, start paying attention to the presidential election. it's going to scare the daylights out of them. The economy is doing great, unemployment at it's lowest ever, consumer confidence at it's highest, etc. etc. etc.. When voters realize that the dems want to take a stick of dynamite to it all, Trump will win in a landslide.

Background checks are now gun confiscation? You lost credibility at sentence #2. Most NRA MEMBERS want background checks, never mind regular humans. Well, other people's kids are dying daily so you have no skin in the game.

I guess “we’ll see what happens” when people get a chance to vote out the most corrupt president and admin “in the history of our country”.

Bozo and Spartacus. Bernie and Kamala want gun confiscation Red Sox. I am 100% for stronger background checks and closing gun show loopholes. But that's not enough for most far left contenders.

For the first time chase? Let's go back the polls leading up to the 2016 election. Remember those?

I think we're going to have a record turn out in 2020. I think a lot of people who didn't bother to vote in 2016 regret it.

"For the first time ever he is underwater as relates to the economy in several polls."

Mrs , for the first time ever as President he is under water in several polls as reates to the economy. I actually don't recall any polling on his handling of the economy before he was handling the economy.

hmmm cattyles, given another term , I'm sure he'll accomplish all of his promises. He's done a pretty good job so far. While dems have done nothing but try to destroy him. And doing a lousy job of it.

Something changed dramatically about 2009. It's a great and powerful trend.

True chase. But as soon as the public realizes that the Lame Stream Media has been lying to them about a looming recession, like they lie to them about so many things, those numbers will go back up.

  • Take on the NRA and its corrupting effect on Washington. The NRA
has become a partisan lobbying public-relations entity for gun
manufacturers, and its influence must be stopped.
  • Expand background checks.
  • End the gun show loophole. All gun purchases should be subject to the same background check standards.
  • Ban
the sale and distribution of assault weapons. Assault weapons are
designed and sold as tools of war. There is absolutely no reason why
these firearms should be sold to civilians.
  • Prohibit high-capacity ammunition magazines.
  • Crack down on “straw purchases” where people buy guns for criminals.

That hardly sounds like gun confiscation to me.

Secondly, here are his major campaign promises:

1)Mexico paid for Trump Wall
2) Repeal of Obamacare
3)Infrastructure bill
4)Reduced drug prices
5)Lower healthcare costs
6)Winning the trade war
7)5% growth
8)decreasing the national debt
9)Increased coal mining jobs
10) Locking up Hillary
11) Defeating ISISHe has accomplished exactly
zero of them. And if you didn't vote for him because he's a "moral
slug" in your words, why would you start now? 0-11 makes him a giant
loser.

You sell the American people short. They don't need the media to understand if the economy is turning sour. Guess it's sorta like those Blacks that don't understand that the Dems are manipulating them....everyone is stupid except Trump supporters.

Job growth is down over 2018, GDP is anemic, the trade wars are costing jobs and hurting profits, global markets are shrinking.......

I am not normally so obnoxious as to point out someone's mistake, especially when it's obvious what was meant. However the following mistake gives me the heebie jeebies and I beg you, chase, to correct it. Puhleeze! ; -)

He barely squeaked through in 2020 and has been losing ground ever since.

------------

Someone upthread claimed the lies about trump would come back to haunt the Dems or is already hurting us. Oh. My. Lord. As if anyone has to lie about trump. And seriously, a trump supporter accusing others of lying? I won't even address whether they lie or not, but to not hold the biggest liar the world has ever known to account for his lies is the height of hypocrisy. Looky there, I used some of trump's "best words" to describe him, hyperbole not needed.

Glad you

He barely squeaked through in 2016 and has been losing ground ever
since. For the first time ever he is underwater as relates to the
economy in several polls.

As far as the Democratic platform goes, I think most Americans are
smart enough to figure out that huge change won't magically happen. Even
if you elect a Progressive President that doesn't make the House and
Senate majority progressive...and that's where change happens.

You may think the Democratic platform scary but at least they have
one. Healthcare, as reflected in many polls, is the number one issue
with American voters . Seems to me I recall a few weeks back that Trump
was getting ready to unveil his healthcare plan any day.........anyone
heard details? 1 Like

I think the unpopularity increase of Dems likely has more to do with the intensely angry way Dems are acting. Who wants to act or feel like that and who would feel good about people who do.

Well chase, maybe Trump can run on improving the economy, or bringing down unemployment, or rising wages.....hmmm, well maybe he can run on keeping this economy and unemployment numbers and keep the wages rising. Sounds good to me.

Or maybe Ann, people are looking at Los Angeles, Seattle, Baltimore, Chicago, etc. and starting to wonder why people would put dems in charge of the whole country.
