Your most fragrant and best Buck roses
Comments (6)I cant remember about scent, but a couple of Bucks that I really like and dont hear much about are Bright Melody and Dorcas. Strong, healthy, lots of blooms. Blue Skies and Silver Shadows didnt thrive and didnt make it, but all the ones I have planted are exceptionally nice roses - I have just planted a bunch of new ones - I really like the Bucks for their health and many blooms....See MoreYour most fragrant long lasting cut roses please!
Comments (20)For anyone who likes research, here is a nice article on fragrant roses as cut flowers: http://horttech.ashspublications.org/content/18/4/734.full Field Performance of Cut Flower Rose Cultivars in Mississippi Crofton Sloan1,2 and Susan S. Harkness1 +Author Affiliations 1Mississippi State University, North Mississippi Research and Extension Center, P.O. Box 1690, Verona, MS, 38879 Next Section Summary Rose (Rosa) cultivars from two breeders, Meilland Star and W. Kordes Söhne, were planted in field beds at Verona, Mississippi, to evaluate cut flower production potential. Seventeen cultivars of an outdoor cut flower series of roses from W. Kordes Söhne and nine cultivars of the Romantica series from Meilland Star were planted in adjacent field beds. The number of stems produced per plant and stem length were measured to assess the field production potential of cut flower stems in Mississippi. Based on 2 years of assessment, the best performing W. Kordes Söhne roses were ‘Fantasia Mondiale’, ‘Masquerade’, and ‘Pinguin’, averaging three to 12 stems/plant per month that were at least 30 cm long, and the best Meilland Star cultivars for outdoor cut flower production were ‘Frederic Mistral’, ‘Michelangelo’, ‘The McCartney Rose’, and ‘Traviata’, averaging three to 20 stems/plant per month that were at least 30 cm long. These cultivars performed well during the heat of the Mississippi summer....See MoreMost Fragrant Rose in your Garden??
Comments (59)Barbara's pasture, Irene ford, Elisabeths china, Grandmothers hat, madam anissette, Mary rose, golden celebration, angel face, and Julia child. Scentimental and duchesse de brabant have a decent fragrance also. I also have setzer noisette and have been told it has a strong musk/ floral scent but I'm not sure I can smell noisettes that well since It smells lightly to me . I also have copperopolis bar which was described as VERY fragrant, but it's a slow establishing rose that puts most of its energy into trying to bloom , so I haven't had many blooms to smell....See Moreopinions on most strongly fragrances roses
Comments (9)It's best to smell the roses in person, grown locally if possible. Strong is subjective, and different people may smell the same rose and have different impressions. For example I think Alnwick Castle is one of the strongest smelling rose in my garden, and can smell a single flower open from yards away, but my friends do not agree, and have to put their nose into the flower to smell it. Also, a strong smelling rose may not be a good thing. When I grew Glamis Castle, I found that it smelled very strong: of mothballs. Similarly with Wollerton Old Hall. Others have commented that GC smells like dirty diaper pails, and yet others say it smells great. When I went to Oregon, I smelled one in a display garden and it did smell great! Not like mothballs at all. Souvenir de la Malmaison is called "The Queen of Beauty and Fragrance" and yet many people find that it smells of beer, as I do. Not that you have any of these on your list, or any roses that some interpret as stinky, but my point is that if you can, sniff the roses before you buy them if you want a fragrance you like. Roses have a lot of variability in their fragrances. Different roses can smell like lemon, fruit, grapefruit, litchi, sandalwood, musk, honey, cherry candy, cedar, almond, peaches, violets, raspberry, plum, cloves... That being said, I find that Madame Isaac Pereire has a particularly well balanced fragrance, having a lot of depth and nuance. Louise Odier often smells like the plastic that they package clothes in to me. Another thing to keep in mind is that strong fragrance is not necessarily the same as wafting (the ability to smell it from a distance). I agree with Chris Martins Zone6a Chicago on this. For example, Marie Pavie doesn't smell that strong when I put my nose into it, but I can still smell it from yards away. Abraham Darby has a strong fruity delicious fragrance, but only if I have my nose close to it, and from a foot away I can't smell it at all, unless as a cut flower in enclosed space of the house....See Moredianela7analabama
