Apple Tree Trouble
Comments (8)Planted 2 years ago, from seed. Don't know what kind because daugther started it from one of her apples, so more then likely a crab. Yes the leaves did have spots and kind of light green in color (leaf), but now it went from that to now drying up but not falling off. The tree looked really good in the spring and I made sure that it was getting watered when there wasn't rain for long periods....See MoreTree tubes for apple trees?
Comments (6)I consider a tree tube as protection against rabbits munching lower trunk of a tree which is worse than deer eating branches. You can use fabric cloth and make a wide ring around each tree about 3 ft tall. You have 30 trees, you may want to consider setting up a deer fence. Keep in mind a deer can jump over a 6ft fence. Rabbits sometimes find a way to dig under deer fence....See MoreApple Tree Pruning - Old Tree - Again - Timing - Grafting
Comments (48)Well, much to my surprise, some of the grafts that I put on last year grew fruit spurs, and flowered this spring. Some others grew longer, with no spurs. Maybe those were what the buds were intended for all along, and they just now came out. Anyways, a few flowers on last year's grafts is interesting. This year's grafts have started to really take off. I think I did a much better job of it this year than last. I have a few more scions on the way, so I hope to get those on this weekend, and harvest a few apples in a few years. This winter, I'll try to bring this tree back down to size. BTW - it must've overproduced year before last, then been stunted last year. This year, it is totally covered in flowers. If those turn to apples, I'll have to do a lot of thinning. Fun stuff - thanks for the help everyone....See MoreHow to Restore these Apple Trees
Comments (0)I just discovered that I've got 6 apple trees in the back yard! They all have many small (different variety) apples that look like they've got worm holes in them all. Lots of dead wood and mossy wood. Growth up to 20 ft., which is way to tall for me to reach. It's zone 6a, and late summer, what can I do right now? Are these salvageable? What should I do in the fall/winter, and then next spring? I want to renovate these trees so they start producing for our family. I'd like them to be lower in height, so we can harvest them. I am also planning on planting more apple trees in the future, and I want to learn how to properly care apple trees. I've watched the Tom Spellman / Dave Wilson Nursery YouTube videos, and read up on "renovating old apple trees", so I'm aware of the different techniques. But it seems so daunting when you have never done it before. Where to start? Also, I'd like to keep these organic, so what sprays are recommended, and how often? I've tried to find a fruit tree arborist / person, but can't find anyone (which I find crazy). THANKS IN ADVANCE!! As you can see, I just cut the grass around these for the first time in years probably. I've got lots of wood chips, should I put them down around here? Or something else like compost? This one is heavily leaning over, but the trunk and tree feel very sturdy (and is growing apples!). Wish I knew what to do....See MoreJohn D Zn6a PIT Pa
