Beautiful cabin. Since it's very modern, I'd keep it simple with vertical red cedar siding instead of shingles. Your fascia and soffit appear to be the same color as your window grids. I'd keep them that color and paint the deck and posts the same.

Wanted to add a more close up picture of the A Frame. Also, just built a nice large 24x16 Ipe deck with white post sleeves and cable railing. I plan to keep the Ipe oiled rather than let it weather to silver grey.

More info... the sliding doors are vinyl clad and difficult to paint so that color is probably set in stone.

The white on the sliders is pretty unobtrusive, but really, the white on the posts needs to go.

Thanks Grover, I agree with you on the white posts-they are a problem; however they were just installed and will be very difficult and expensive to replace. (All the cable railing would have to be redone in order to remove them.). They are timbertec composite sleeves. I wrestled with the color of the sleeves that would go with the Ipe deck and I chose the white because it looked the best with the Ipe. When I looked at the colored sleeves I didn’t like how they looked with the Ipe decking. I didn’t consider how much they would stand out from the lake. It’s done now and I need to figure out how to work with it.
Here is a photo of the deck with the sleeves. My plan was to paint the rim joists on the deck a matching white with the sleeves.
What do you think if I painted the white on the rim joist of the deck to match the sleeves and replace the trim on the gable including the window grids with CVG western red cedar and painted the front rafter a darker brown? Not sure what I would do with the soffits? Maybe paint them the same color as the rafters?
There is a 10” of trim on the gable surrounding the windows. I’ll put a better photo of the detail there as well.

The white was a mistake. I think to paint the rim joists white will compound it. Here are a few versions I've Photoshopped for you.

I would be inclined to paint everything the same brown you've already used and carry the frieze boards all the way down to the deck.

I found this photo and this is really what I had my heart set on, but with cedar sidewall shingles on the walls beside the doors. Is there any chance that you could photoshop that for me? PS I agree that painting the bottom of the deck white would compound my mistake. I worked my butt off building that deck and feel kinda sick that the posts look out of place when looking at the house from the lake.

We all make decisions when we remodel that we regret later...sometimes it is because of the budget, or we have to compromise with a partner, etc. I think your cabin and deck are stunning...the posts can be painted after they weather, according to the internet.....but that would cut into your “enjoying the view with an adult beverage”time. There’s always a trade off!

I did look into (briefly) painting the composite sleeves, but it sort of defeats the whole purpose of them. The Timbertech website just says you don't need to paint them and doesn't address whether or not you can.

While composite decks like Trex aren’t designed or required to be paintable or stainable, like their natural wood counterparts, they can and will accept paint under certain circumstances – if properly cleaned, prepped and primed. Adding deck stain for composite decking or a topcoat of paint can help restore the color and beauty while extending your deck’s already long lifespan.

Thanks Groveraxle! Do you think that the last renderingwould look good if I carried WRC trim all around the windows and re did trim on the window grids in WRC trim boards. Then paint the soffits and front rafter in dark brown?

The surface of the posts is much different from any composite decking that I’ve seen. it seems more like gelcoat on a boat. Very hard and smooth. I’m sure it could be sanded primed and painted, but then I’m into a maintenance battle around all those cables that can’t be removed without cutting the cable. I think its like fissfiss said. I made a mistake/compromise. I will say that I’m very happy with the railing while on enjoying the deck, but it does look out of place from the front view.

I like this one as well as the one with all western red cedar. Frankly, I'd choose the one that promises less maintenance. More time for wine on the deck. (P.S. Let me know when it's finished. I'll bring a lovely bottle of pinot noir.)

You’re invited!!! But the wine is on me. There is a lot to be said for the low maintenance option. I just love the beauty of natural wood. (Except for the post sleeves :). I was worried about how difficult it would be to maintain the post sleeves with all the cables making it very difficult to refinish. Right now I’m leaning toward the cedar option, maybe with a darker semitransparent stain.
