Botched parquet sand/stain job
Comments (6)Thanks to you both for responding. The company is claiming that the pre-existing condition of the wood and the choice of stain is the reason why it is uneven (of course, neither of these things were mentioned to me when I had the guy come out to do the estimate, and I told them upfront I wanted dark brown floors...obviously they were just anxious to get my money.) Greg, I have read some about water popping and may have my 2nd company write the estimate with that in there so that the floors are even darker and more even. I didn't realize when posting that I could only add one photo per post but here is the photo of the sample that was never sanded off before the job begun. You can see clearly here two tiles that are almost black. I am negotiating with the original company now...first they proposed I get another company to do the work and then they will inspect it and if the other company did a better job, they will refund me my deposit ($900)...yeah right. What a joke. And did I mention this is a small 1 br condo and I have been completely displaced from my apartment by the work - my kitchen and bathroom are filled with my furniture! What a headache....See MoreHelp! Contractor messed up staining the stairs treads
Comments (8)The labor for staining will probably be less than ordering somewhere between 6 and 14 more of the stair nosings. Right now is actually a great time to go out and find someone to stain them. You might be able to get in on the side-job-because-my-kids-want-bulbous-plastic-yard-toys pricing. A small job like this that can be worked into down days and empty time slots can get you a good price, especially close to Christmas. The problem with using the remaining flooring is the fact that you can't just slap it on top of your current treads. The floor is either 3/8" or 1/2" - so your first tread would be a noticeably bigger step. To be done right you have to lower every riser by 3/8" or 1/2" - you might be able to cheese it and only take a little bit off the bottom 3-6 risers so that it blends in, but it will be expensive to do all that, unless your contractor will do the labor for free....See MoreCan anyone suggest tallish gold that is still gold in much shade?
Comments (26)Jon, I only wish I still had a Paul's Glory. It was my favorite hosta for years and years. Mine had a couple of reversions, but even the variegated eyes began to look more green than light centered. I dug the whole plant out about 2 or 3 years ago. Divided out the reversions and planted the solids in a very back bed. Gave the still PG-looking part a new home. Now I don't think that part is even still alive....See MoreScratch on newly sanded/stained floors - d'oh!
Comments (21)So instead of taking out the planks, they just sanded the two that the scratch covered (and covered the nearby ones with blue tape), re-stained and re-poly'ed. We used the same exact stain (different jar, though) we used when we originally did these floors about 7 weeks ago. The two planks came out a bit darker than I'd like, but they aren't awful, and it's only noticeable under certain lighting conditions (they look great at night when my kitchen lights are all on). Will likely just leave them as is, or maybe sand/re-stain one or two more nearby ones to help them blend in a bit more maybe. But I will likely just leave them and chalk them up to the natural variation of these floors lol. Plus when I do my kitchen in the next year or two, I'm likely putting tiles or re-staining the floors something else at that time anyway....See MoreRelated Professionals
