Dark blue house - best door color?

Hello! So we are currently in the building process. We have decided to use Sherwin William’s Sea Serpent for our exterior color. The trim will be white. Greystone for roof. I’ll attach pictures. We decided to use painted doors but what I’m having issues with is trying to find the perfect color. It will be double doors. Please help! It has to be a Sherwin Williams color as that is what the builder uses. I have found a picture online of a nice color but it’s Benjamin Moore. It looks like SW rain is the closest match. Any thoughts? Thanks!

You did not ask, but I'll suggest anyway -- It looks like you are planning stone on the face of the garage.

You would not normally build a garage out of stone as it's a more expensive material than siding. In this case, the stone belt around the lower part of the house is plenty, and consider wrapping it around the entire house, and not just across the front.

Another option would be to cover the exposed part of the foundation with the stone, again all around the house, and use siding for the entire walls.

I noticed the pitch of these roof planes is different -- see the red and blue lines. They might look better if the angle of the blue line matched the red.

Have you decided on windows? Type (slider, casement, single or double hung) and grid pattern if any.

Did you consider taller windows instead of using transoms? If you do use transoms, consider making them uniform across the front of the house (all same height, same grid etc).

It has to be a Sherwin Williams color as that is what the builder uses.

SW can match colors so just pick one you like.

On my screen, your house looks distinctly red-brown - that reddish stain many people use for deck stain. With the red-brown body, I just can't envision blue "going". I'd do a khaki door - with brown trim and seasonal wreaths, it will really pull people in. Squint and pretend this isn't a formal Georgian entrance lol See how the khaki stands out against the dark brick?

OP, I like the last inspiration pic you posted the best (the bottom pic). Consider working with someone to photoshop your home with those colors. Then you can see what works. You would need to make sure your landscaping is terrific if you choose to go with a dark on dark look IMO.

Sorry, I know this is old but we are trying to pick our exterior colors and considering Dorian with a blue door. The finished pic you posted is completely different than the color in the posted visualizer pic correct? I love they way yours turned out but I don't like the color that it looks like in the one visualizer comments.

I think the blue you picked was perfect. I really like it, and cannot imagine a better color for your door. Your porch is adorable, and a huge feature, but the reality is that any door, no matter the color, is going to look dark under a porch overhang, especially at 7 pm at night. And that is not a bad thing, because THE PORCH is awesome. Who doesn't dream of hanging out on a front porch? When it's time to list the house, play up the coziness of the porch with a chair or small bench beside the door with some colorful boots underneath it, or bright pillows on it. Or maybe bright wreaths on the double doors. The blue will make a great background for floral or leaf wreaths.

Thanks for your reply! The only reason we are thinking of putting stone on the face of the garage is so there isn’t so much blue. I guess I’m concerned that the blue we chose might be too dark so in my mind choosing gray stone would counteract that. Plus, I found a house online and really loved the look! I really love natural lighting. The more the better. The builder suggested adding transom windows. The plan is for all the windows to have transoms so it can have a uniform look. Would taller windows look better? I certainly wouldn’t be opposed to that. Honestly I’m not sure on the windows. We did choose perimeter style windows. I hadn’t noticed the pitch of the roof planes! That’s something I will bring up on the next meeting. Thank you for suggestions!

If you are thinking that, maybe this blue isn't the right color?

Is your designer able to do color renderings like I show above? The colors will never exactly match the real world, but will give you a good idea of what the house will look like with various options.

Not a pro.

Lullaby appears to be the most blue of the grays (at least on my PC screen) and I'd personally prefer it to the others for siding or, unless you're using it for your siding, then for your door. If you use it for your siding, you could then use a dark bold cobalt blue or even black for the front door. You could use white for both the window trim and the fascia.

Since someone else mentioned it: Personally prefer to either use the stone to cover only the foundation and/or use it to cover the entire wall or at least the entire section of a wall -- such as using it for covering the foundation and everything beneath the one forward facing gable with the front door. Then use a gray siding (taking a color from the stone) on the rest of the exterior walls.

Something you might consider is changing the one hip roof section over the front door to be a forward facing gable with the smaller gable just over the portico.
