Thanks so much for all the great ideas and opinions. Here is a little more info. It's actually all one piece and not a top and bottom and there were never doors on it. There is a label somewhere that says "True Grand Rapids-Cabinet Making Certified" although they advertised it as being in excellent condition it's definitely not. I like the examples that were posted and my family room has a side table and coffee table that are distressed off white (Broyhill Attic Heirloom series) but the wall behind it will be a tan color when the drywall is finished in a week or two, the floor it will sit on will be honey oak and the chairs around the table are black. My table actually matches the color of the piece now but I always have a table cloth on it these days (I've got 4 kids). I've kicked around the idea of going barn red but either black, off white, or red, I'm just not sure the formal piece will look right going rustic although some of the examples above have that same formal look and they painted up very nice. I'll try to post pictures of the surroundings tomorrow. Thanks again for the ideas and opinions.

Claire, nope they are all level. But maybe you’re seeing the gaps in between the planks that are typical for old floors. We choose to not fill them in. They still have to finish the toe trim.

I will send a sofa pic when I get home. You are right about the placement but... the stove is fixed and the TV is in the only place without window glare. I am open to a multicolored rug and prefer nothing traditional or with fringe. We are on a working farm so light colors are out. I would like to tone down the gold sofa and am open to about any other darker color. The front door is the main door and is used for farmers, kids and everything in between. Thanks so much for taking a look! Although we are farmers I am looking for something in terms of style for an updated look that will combine both farmhouse style and a more modern look. very nice room. The rug and that chair work, the sofa in the white is meh. (definite no in that gray color). but I think you can do better. I would have gone w/crisper whites and blacks and warmer grays. Maybe that PB rug is nicer in person, but in the photo the color looks really muddy. I like the ones in this pic,,,deep charcoal, whites, grays, touch of light aqua.. and this table For rug, I'd do a coloring like this one, or some of the others in the pics I love your floors and thing you should bring in some wood in your sofa, even if it is on the modern side. Like this: A walnut, style sofa like this, in a navy, charcoal, very light gray,,,would be perfect more blacks/charcoal, crisp whites, some texture, don't know what the plans are for the sides of the fireplace, but here are some ideas
