It's September, 2014. How is your Build? Part 2
Comments (150)Autumn, oicu, jdez, skyangel -- Thanks for the comment on the Blanco sticker. It does look like someone tried to remove it, and now it is warped :/ I would like it to stay on so as not to leave any residue or something, since it does look like it is meant to stay. Oicu, we have the same sink, but different colors. Ours is truffle. It was our original choice to match the faucet, but I went back and forth between that and metallic gray. Jdez, nice sink! That was another option I was looking at, but didn't get to see an actual sample. Musicgal-- Lovely home! Robynstamps -- Almost there! We are 2 weeks away from closing. The windows that are not in the center have yet to be corrected, but we have been told we are still on track. The deck is done. Yesterday they started on the wood floors and carpet. Appliances have been coming in (basement refrigerator has 2 big dents and needs to be replaced). Closets have been started as well. Lights need to go up, and plumbing fixtures are being installed here and there. We come at the end of the day and see 2 additional faucets in, it's crazy. Still waiting on more trim material (lots were not up to the trim carpenter's standards). Other things that need to get started: kitchen backsplash, wallpaper, window treatments. Hope we make it!! We are closing on our current house too. Lots of packing going on that is why I haven't been here much. Wish us luck!...See Moreit's september how is your build coming along?
Comments (39)Well, how about a mid-month update? :) It has been crazy with building and gettina all the kids back to school. We have a roof, hvac, and rough plumbing is complete. We got our fireplace installed and now they are working on the wiring. Our windows and doors will start to go in tomorrow. Hopefully we can get the housewrap and siding on soon as we are in Oregon and the sunny days we are having could come to an end any time! We have been living on site since mid July and it has been great for keeping things on track, but hard to have a life apart from the house. It's a good thing we are enjoying the process. Congrats to Jaymie and Laney! How exciting for you guys to be in! Your homes are beautiful. Jaymie, you have done a fabulous job with your home. The attention to detail and how you carried the style all the way through on all of your design decisions is apparent and the result is wonderful. You should send some pics to the Mascord people, they might add you to their site!...See MoreIt's September 2014. How is your build? Part 3
Comments (95)Framer pointed out to me today that our architect's drawings assume 14" thick joists, but the joist company sent us 11 7/8", as indicated in the joist plan. Architect was on his way to the site to discuss changing out my "post" made of 2x6s for a steel post that's more attractive. So we discussed the fact that our house is going to be 6" shorter than planned. It's a problem because we wanted the house taller, but the city wouldn't allow it. On the upside, we can get an extra 6" of headroom on the 3rd floor, where it's desperately needed. On the downside, the floor of the 3rd floor is now 6" lower, which reduces our view. We'd have liked it to be a foot HIGHER. We would have made the lower floor ceilings higher. But now our 3rd floor deck is lower, so we'll need to build a platform up there so we can see over tree tops. Boo. Architect swears that the joist company pulled a last minute switch. He claims he had designed for a 12" joist, but the joist company spec'd 14" ones, and he spent an evening stretching all the joists in Autocad. But I looked at all our different versions of joist plans, and we never had 14" ones spec'd. I think this goes into the list of things he would have caught if he'd actually READ the joist plan. But, hey, more headroom on the 3rd floor means more useable floor space, since the ceilings are sloped. DH wouldn't be able to stand anywhere but right in the middle in the original plan. Musicgal, fall in Vermont is spectacular. But I think you're there a couple of weeks early....See MoreI still can't edit- UGH
Comments (18)The less vs fewer also bothers me, but I never say anything about it because it is so prevalent. I told someone once that "less" is the comparative for "little", and if "little" does not fit in the sentence, then "less" should not be used. It's easier to remember that "less" can only be used with singular nouns while "fewer" must be used with plural nouns, or at least that's the way it was taught to me in the third grade. My grandmother and mother were both English teachers, and my grandmother was extremely intolerant of grammatical errors. English was her second language, and she only spoke German until she was seven. I think that in 50 years, no one will use what was considered proper grammar in the 20th Century and earlier....See MoreLori Wagerman_Walker
