Saloom vs. Canadel-- table top durability
Comments (3)Saloom is better by a mile. The finishes are of similar durability, but maple is much harder than birch. I've sold both and owned both. Go with Saloom. Also, Canadel's chairs aren't even in same league as Saloom. Either way you'll need placemats and table manners to keep the table in its best shape for the longest time. For arts+crafts projects, (or if you can't get the kids to cooperate with table manners) cover with a table pad and table cloth. I you want a table that won't need a tablecloth, ever, then you have to get Formica or spend a boatload more for Corian/Zodiac/Granite. I sell the stuff and I have a lot of customers who spent decades surrounded by Formica, linoleum, and carpet. The wood is so beautiful and does hold up with really just a little care, I think you'll be fine. Medium finishes show blemishes the least and are easily retouched if necessary. Comments (4)Not sure which Nichols and Stone set you are looking at, but their windsor chairs (across the entire line) are pound-in glue-socket construction rather than the much more durable bore and wedge construction you find in higher end chairs. N&S makes heavy, solid furniture of medium durability, however it is not hand-crafted and is largely made using high-speed production techniques. -Duane...See MoreAmish furniture quality (vs. major brands)?
Comments (14)Found this old thread, but feel that I need to comment based on a recent experience we had with "amish" built furniture. We purchased a dining room table, 6 chairs and a hutch from Amish Oak Furniture in Pataskala, Ohio. They also have a store in Loudonville, Ohio. We searched in many stores for exactly what we were looking for. We were impressed at Amish Oak that we could custom order the furniture, choosing the stain and the chair seat upholstery design. We spent over $3,000 for the furniture in 2008. This set was used once or twice a year in the dining room in our home and had no problems. Fast forward to 2015 when we moved and our new home did not have a separate dining room. We decided to use this set for our everyday use. Less than a year later the chairs are falling apart. Two are so bad, we don't take a chance sitting on them. We took two of the chairs back to the store to be repaired. They want to charge us $95 a piece to repair them, even though their website claims a "Lifetime Warranty". These chairs were rarely used from 2008-2015 and have minimal use in the last 18 months. We are a soccer family so we don't sit down and eat dinner every day. We don't abuse them, we're not obese. I WILL NEVER buy from them again. I expected Amish built to last a lifetime and wanted this set to be a family heirloom for our children and grandchildren. Our dinette set from Wal Mart gets much more use and has held up so much better - all for $150!...See MoreI'm about to order my new dining rm furniture!
Comments (24)Phoggie!! It's nice to hear from you again! I can't believe what a great memory you have.. those lamps were 4+ yrs ago! How exciting about your new home, I'm sure the Amish crew will do you good! Thank you everyone! I just returned from actually "seeing" all the sample! I got a price locally - it's CRAZY, I guess they don't want my business! They are 50% higher... Anyway, the samples I saw were awesome, and helped me narrow it down between Barcelona & Pecan, but they really almost look the same!? I was about to ask the designer some questions, and he helped.. somewhat. In regards to the hutch, I think I will do the same color... 12 to 14 weeks before it arrive... so just intime for the holidays!...See MoreRelated Professionals
