Roses from Antique Rose Emporium
Comments (21)I rarely have that problem with roses unless they come from afar. One of the best vendors I have done business with is Amity Heritage, and invariably, not only do their roses have buds, but some leaves will be falling off which only means that they lacked oxygen in transit and will be replacing the old with the new. Some of the best roses in my garden came from Amity and yes, they are small, but they are great to deal with. As far as Ashdown, ARE, Chamblee, RU, I never have that problem, probably because they take a limited amount of time to get here, but I still think Amity's roses are some of the best I have ever bought and will continue buying from them that which I cannot get from closer nurseries, knowing that the yellowing leaves that are falling off are going to be gone soon and new ones will appear. However, my recipe for them is to keep them in a baking pan in my kitchen window with about an inch of water and I take them out at noon each day for a day in the sun. Once it starts warming up, I keep them out longer each day, by taking them out a couple hours in the morning, around noon and late afternoon. After a couple weeks, they are acclimated and ready to go in the ground and some of the best roses I have....See MoreAntique Rose Emporium Fall Festival of Roses
Comments (17)Actually Sue, I am intending to come out west again within a few months. I was in California in June/July of 2006 for a week or so, and had a blast! I had wanted to walk 'neath those stately redwoods since I first saw a film about them in elementary school, a long LONG time ago! Since I have been there in summer, I am shooting for a winter or early spring visit next time. I would love to meet some of my California rose friends while I am there this time! Comments (35)I have had exactly two blooms on mine so far but it has been so hot this season any rose that produces a flower at all seems remarkable. She is pretty new, in full hot sun. I have put her in her next to Star of the Republic which is a favorite of mine but also not blooming at the moment. Gypsy Sue's first flower, produced when it was still cool, was graceful and peachy, a bit smaller than SotR, slightly pinker. The second flower produced recently, was pure white, also graceful, and lasted about 2 100 degree days before a clean petal drop. So far I don't love or hate it, but I do feel is is not doing badly for its conditions and hope it sticks around. If a pastel rose is going to turn white in heat (which mostly they do) I prefer a pure white to a dirty cream and I like a clean petal drop. Otherwise in wait and see mode....See MoreAntique Rose Emporium - Please Disregard this thread
Comments (18)I doubt it, Summers. They are keeping the mail order business. I was at ARE (the display gardens) a couple of weekends ago, so it is still there, but some of the plants were looking a little haggard (it is Summer though so not the best time to view many rose/plant display gardens). The grounds with the mail-order roses were close enough that from the retail establishment/display gardens, a call could be made, and someone would bring in stock roses over in 15-20 minutes. Unfortunately, looking at RRD maps, if this scourge is not eradicated, in a short amount of time, I fear it will be everywhere in the continental U.S....See MoreLilyfinch z9a Murrieta Ca
