Mooncake time again

Last year I mentioned that it was time for mooncakes for the Autumn Festival. This year it is early on September 13. I already made my trek to my favorite store and stocked up. Unlike last year where they were cheap and much smaller than normal in size these were back to the 4-6 inch size of previous years. Same brand just different size. There were more double yolk ones than in previous years when that type was hard to find. They are also much more expensive although I did not purchase the ones for $110 because those contained Durian and I can not taste or smell Durian so would have been wasted on me. They were also refrigerated.

I hope as my comment did last year that posting this about mooncakes brings pleasant memories to some.

You have me interested. I hope I have time tomorrow to stop at the Asian market. Hopefully I will find some mooncake.

I always buy mooncakes when they become available this time of year. I love them and have been eating them for over 40 years. I have to travel from Santa Cruz to Silicon Valley to get them. There are lots of Asian food stores there. On the Cooking Forum someone has posted a recipe to make your own. I am too lazy.

I'm sure the mooncakes are wonderful but I've never eaten one and I, for one, am leery of making/using lye water. Eons ago I watched my MIL make pickles with lime. No thank you - too dangerous for me to mess with.

Thanks, Chloebud! Especially for the timing since this is a one meal cut piece (I've done plenty of whole briskets and halves, but never a quarter like this, or corned beef). I'm just winging it. :) I'm sure it'll be fine. I'm also looking at a recipe for more like a traditional braise (I realize that I've never actually boiled meat that wasn't for stock/soup). Worst case scenario, we'll order pizza. :) It's not a holiday dinner for us. When I was in 4th grade, I didn't know it was St. Patrick's Day that day (younger grades did decorations ahead of the holiday, but we were studying aviation and our projects were air related, not holiday crafts. This is in a very culturally mixed school, btw. So I just dressed as usual, in a pretty jumper and top, and a girl in my class screwed up her face in anger and socked me before class. I was utterly baffled. She was from an Irish heritage family. At age 10, I'd never even heard of Orangemen, or thought anything about my dress other than it was pretty and made me happy, in shades of pumpkin. I promise not to make orange corned beef, or green for that matter... Dcarch, my assumption would be that they'd attacked the meat with one of those bed of nails type things because I can't imagine pounding brisket would get you anywhere... If it were a chemical tenderizer, would they be required to list it?

I was gifted with the molds but I too am too lazy to make my own. I do need to make the trip again because I like the sweeter red bean paste and they only had the black bean. I simply cannot enjoy the ones that are wrapped in a very thin filo dough type dry coating. Which is sad because they do have nice fillings but I seem to choke on the coating.

I'm on the list of the never heard of them group. Had to Google them. Amazon sells a tin of 6 for $20.00 and up. Thought about sending for some, but my curiosity hasn't driven me to it yet.

They have them at the Hong Kong market. I have not tried them yet. I am often tempted by some of the very unique products there.

I think of them as like other seasonal items that originate in a particular culture. People like them as a cultural tradition, others may or may not. I've tried them a few times (same region as caflower) and haven't found them to be to my liking.
