PLEASE Help... Layout Disaster.
Comments (30)I have to respectfully disagree...Bevangel's layout has the same change I proposed...changing the sliding door to a single door. The only difference is where the door is placed. More importantly, it also has one big "deal breaker" for me...the sink run! (Sorry, Bevangel!) (1) There's inadequate workspace around the sink...24" to the right (looking at the layout) is way too little considering there is none whatsoever to the left of the sink and (2) the DW opens into the DR doorway. [DW will take up approx 25" of wall space b/c you'll need at least an inch b/w the wall & the DW to clear the door frame, then you need at least 3" (preferably 6") b/w the outside door & the nearest cabinet at the other end, and a 1" overhang also at the end of the run...that leaves you with approx 29" - 32" of room for the sink base with no work space or buffer on the left side.] I also would want the door to swing the other way as right now the door and oven doors are at great risk...if either one opens into the other you risk breaking the glass of the other (or both!) With this kitchen, I think a range works better with the age of the house (1940). I also think it's a better use of space. Food & other storage as well as counterspace are at a premium in this size/configuration of a kitchen. I think a better use of a "tall cabinet" that takes away counterspace is a pantry cabinet. You could install an oven under the cooktop, but what's the point? The oven is closer to the floor than a range's oven would be and it's more expensive. If you argue that you could store food under the counter instead (b/c you've gained undercounter space), I'd argue that under counter food storage below the first drawer or so isn't as nice as over the counter or tall cabinets....but that's my opinion....See MoreHelp with microwave placement?
Comments (11)Your kitchen sounds nice and big, so you should have room for what you want. If you cook much, I'd do double ovens (where your current oven/microwave is) and a microwave drawer. FWIW, I love my microwave drawer. I was hesitant as they seem so overpriced and prone to break downs. My design with few upper cabinets made me choose it, but now that I have it, I do love it. I *did* get the extended warranty on it (which I never, ever buy), since they are so prone to problems. 6 months in so far, no troubles. The drawer could be on that big island if you don't want it right next to the fridge. Personally, I'd prefer it on the island to avoid cluttering up that busy landing space next to the fridge with any appliance action. It's also nice having on the island as that's where I prep, so all the butter melting/etc I do for prep stuff is right there. I'd put it on the island somewhere near the fridge end of things. Comments (18)"Veering: I think Costco , SAMs, etc can be a quick trip to a fat farm, or a poor house," Yes, if you're an impulse shopper and/or haven't done your homework regarding what works and what doesn't in your family. Just like shopping anywhere, IMO. I love Costco even in a household of 1 person, but I know what I want and don't want, what I'll use and won't use, etc. I buy things that will store well and I will use up (things like dishwasher detergent, garbage bags, contact lens solution, body lotion, batteries, etc). Outsized packaging is something I figured out easily how to deal with back when I had a little kitchen with awkward shelves (2 kitchens ago), and I decant many things (from white vinegar to baking flour) into reusable jars. To each his/her own -- I'm more likely to be an impulse buyer at Home Depot than I am at Costco....See MorePLS HELP ME LOVE MY NEW KITCHEN
Comments (31)Thank you all some much, you help me a lot and psychologically to feel better that I am going to leave my country style kitchen. Also you helped me understand what are my main dislikes in this kitchen. One thing I realized from your comments is that it is all too "orange"(cabinets and floor) and black, two colors that I really don't like . Also I feel too that is not worth to paint the cabinets or replace the handles(probably it would be very expensive or a disaster to do so DIY)..so i would focus first in taking out the doors or even the whole thing of the upper cabinets to see if it make a change together with all my country things, or even order new doors for these two upper cabinets, if you have any suggestions in colors in the grey area(I liked last photo in Irene's comment and the backsplash in the Asian kitchen by housegal) would be more than welcome. Also I would love if you could advice me regarding replacing the black table/island with a table(probably my own country style table wouldn't match/you can have a look in my old kitchen photo). Thanks a lot!!! *the space you see next is a small kitchen living room area(can being used as TV room or eating space), the "formal" living room and dinner area is in another room that is not being seen by the kitchen....See Moreclt3
