I would make sure that it is a height that makes it easy to change a bulb. We lived in a house and the porch light was over the door -- about another 2 foot up. You needed more than the kitchen ladder to change it and I swear, each bulb lasted a week. We lived in that house six years and I would say for 5 1/2 of them we never had a front door light because it was such a pain to change it!

I know the light bulbs now are different but if it is awkward to change it out for sure it will be a bulb that lasts nano seconds instead of years!

I wouldn't use sconces at all. I'd hang a good sized fixture under that porch.

High enough to illuminate the area you want it to illuminate, low enough to change the lightbulb without scaffolding or cherry picker.

another question. how how do u place bathroom fixtures when they are for down lighting? we have 9ft ceilings.

A lot depends on the fixture and what else is happening on that wall.

You don't need 3 lights at the front door.

Any exterior wall light should be well above your eye level.

A good quality LED lamp (from an electrical supply store not HD) should last 10 years if on half time so don't let changing the lamp determine where you put the fixture.

Avoid recessed downlights in a bathroom anywhere near a mirror.Same for LED and low voltage MR16's. You can get away with using those kinds of lights over a toilet and in tub/shower areas.

The primary purpose of a single wall light would be to justify the offset of the front door.

Too many lights. You don't need all of them.
