Comments (15)Which direction does your house face? If the sun comes from the right (in your photo) you could plant a shading shrub to the right of the porch. There is something about the symmetry of your home that suggests a seating area, or birdbath or waterfeature would look charming on the left side under the small tree. The right side with the drop off would be perfectly OK left as is and not look off balance. Or you could plant the right side with small airy light trees like japanese maples to provide some wind break. Heavier plantings on the right will give your home a more confined look. That isnt bad if you want it to look solid and substantial. Redbuds would be pretty on the far right in the drop off, but you will be watering them for years to keep them alive in the sun until they establish. It would be nice to get some color near the porch. I like the idea of something tall in the pots - like ornamental grass, and something low and colorful near the pots. Perhaps small colorful collection of pots on the front edge of the porch filled with trailing colorful annuals or geraniums, which of course you will be watering every day in summer to keep alive. A windbreak solution I am considering for my back porch is to put a trellis, or woven screen on each side of the porch. They could be supported by a simple arbor frame of a vertical post on the right and left front corners of the porch, a cross piece on top connecting them like an arbor, and some simple framing going from the front, to the wall of the house to support them. A roof isnt needed, but abviously makes the whole thing easier to put up. You wouldnt change the front appearance of the house much, but you would have an enclosed feeling when standing on the porch. White painted wood framing with white wood trellis or black wrought iron trellis would be compatible with your home. Your house is really nice. The good thing about sun are the brilliant flowers you can show off, once you get the whole thing set up right. Shade just doesnt produce the cheerful colors like sun....See MoreHelp me Jazz Up my Front Porch (Pics)
Comments (29)Jan, I love the hayracks, too, but they have to be mounted to a flat surface with screws. No way around it because they are not made to accomodate over the railing brackets. On the back, the top horizontal metal piece is shaped like this _________^_____________^__________. Those 2 little blips up are what you screw under. (I've worked in garden centers so got to know some of the types out there). Just a note - Boston ferns don't do well in full sun. Your picture looks pretty bright. I can't tell if you have trees in the front, but without shade, the fern leaves will be nicely browned by July. Plus, they aren't hardy for the north central zones so us northerners need to treat them as annuals unless you bring them indoors over the winter. I hear what you are saying about covering the brick, but if you have small/medium shrubs in front of the railing, you'd have the variety of a bit of height and the brick. Ideas for shrubs that do well in both the Twin Cities and Chicago so they should work for you are: Spirea - can be trimmed to stay lower hydrangeas - Endless summer don't have enough growing season in our climates to get huge but they need shade potentilla - yellow flower barberry -both a cranberry and a green/yellow variety alpine currant northern grown viburnum (Emerald Triumph) ninebark - The Diablo species has a maroon/green left with red flowers. I have 2 on either side of our back door. Will get taller and would work at the left corner of your house lilacs - again taller so would be better for corners You could also go with sedum as they can stay in place over the winter but add a bit of height. Comments (11)I like the thick 'wrapped" colums. I think the stone half wall is OK but your stoop is a decent size for a stoop...mine is similar but judging from the space next to your front doors, yours is probably a bit bigger and I find that mine is a bit too small. A half wall on each side is going to take up and make your stoop space feel tighter. And I don't know that they will stand out much against the new stone facade for the cos. I think railings would be better and more open. And maybe you don't have to go with the usual thin black wrought iron. On our last house we rebuilt the front stoop and had the contractor build white painted "chippendale" style railings. It was not expensive. When you start looking around you might find there are more options on railings than than the typical ones you aren't too fond of....See MoreHelp me decorate the front of my house for holidays
Comments (13)Thanks roobear - but no wreath on the door b/c I don't want to try to touch up stain (I had a hard time touching up after pulling a hair out). jan - a wreath on either side of the door, the candles and garland? Would lighted garland be too much with (unlit) wreathes so close? I think I'd have to skip lighted trees in urns if I did garland though. Have to be fake trees - I think all the nurseries are closed for the season (except for selling wreathes and garlands). There wasn't much of a selection when I was looking a few weeks ago. Unless I dig up 2 of the dwarf Alberta spruce by my transformer LOL! I'll get the candles out tomorrow or this weekend, take a pic and we'll go from there (if I could get more PS help). DS is selling wreathes for Boy Scouts, I didn't order one b/c I don't want one on door, but they are so nice I'm thinking of having him stash 2 away for me as soon as he gets to his station where they're selling extras on Sat....See Morechloebud
