From a landscape architectural and homeowner perspective, I would want a garden that enhances the value of my home vs one which will depreciate it. By their nature, vegetable gardens are ephemeral, gone with each passing season. With that in mind , coupled with property value enhancement I would suggest that you plan a garden that has strong landscape architectural bones; using evergreen shrubs, espalier hedges and hardscaping (fences and arbors) and then fill in the 'blank planting panels' with your seasonal vegetables. An iconic example of excellent thoughtful vegetable design can be found at Rosemary Verey's veg garden ( google will help ) Once you see how she uses low hedges, espaliered living walls , and short fences to create a garden with both permanence and visual aesthetics you will understand why this element is important. A well planned vegetable garden that uses hedges will uphold the structural value ( financially and aesthetically ) of your landscape when the vegebles are in their transitional stage , which is most of the time during the year. The garden that you linked to is a lovely little plot that looks great for a back yard but as far as a solid front yard design it falls short on upholding the property value. The vegetable garden that I laid out out at my property sits front and center in my front yard but you would never know it until you walked into it. None of my neighbors property values are negatively impacted by my garden because it looks like a farmers patch in the middle of suburbia. I have a short white picket style fence surrounding the front yard and within the yard there are low boxwood clipped hedges that outline the veg and herb beds. Several year ago I had a health dilemma that kept me from working in my garden for a season. I was extremely grateful that the landscaped architectural bones of the garden upheld the beauty and functionality of the space even without the seasonal vegetables and herbs. You have an attractive home, enhance its value with good solid landscape design .

Woodlawn Cemetery on Thompson Lane will give you all the dirt you want for free. I mean anything from a wheelbarrow load to several dump truck loads. That's where I get all my backfill and flower bed dirt. Some is topsoil and some is clay and there may even be some rock in it but it's FREE and you can add whatever you need (compost, fert, nutrients) to it for a small out-of-pocket expense. I just throw it down, till it into the ground and add whatever it needs.

When grown from seed how long before it blooms,or does it bloom? I am curious for right now I am sprouting some seeds bagie method, they are starting to sprout, will they do better in a large container or in ground? Central texas, location. I'd put the arch even with the front wall of the garage. It's a major decorative feature, and you don't want to hide it; it needs to be out there where people can see it. I'm confused about exactly what's going to be where. If you'll be adding roses and dahlias on each side of the arch, where will they be in relation to the conical evergreens? As depicted in the mock-up, the cones are multiple feet farther toward the street than the front of the arch, giving my very literal mind the impression the flowers will be behind the cones, or perhaps that the arch will be hidden behind a tunnel of flowers and shrubbery. I assume that's not what you intended, but the real question is whether you have room for both the flowers and the cones, and which will be where. The arch is probably at least 5' wide; you need a wide one to avoid the thorns on the roses growing through the arch. The roses will take up another foot on each side: so 7' for the arch-and-roses. Add at least half a foot for the future fence (possibly much more depending on your setback law). Subtracted from the 15' width, that leaves only 7 1/2' (and conceivably much less). That means less than 4' on each side of the arch for your roses, dahlias, and conical evergreens. To my mind, that's either a rose on each side or a dahlia on each side or a small shrub on each side. Time to get out the graph paper. While you're drawing your plans, be sure to add the fence which will (I assume) run from the house to the property line. The presence of the fence -- and its height -- will change how you view the arch and its landscaping. Find out about your setback law, because that may affect where you want to site the arch and plant the roses. Even if the conical evergreens aren't in front of the arch, I feel they'd be competing with it. I'd be happier with broader shapes as opposed to cones or anything narrow. Anything tall and narrow -- particularly if it grows higher than the arch -- would seem to be competing with the arch. You want the focus to be on the arch and the roses which grow on it -- that is the feature, not the shrubs surrounding it....
