Thanks for the help! I considered moving the tv to the right wall since its so high above the fireplace, but it seemed the focal part of the room was the fireplace, especially since the ceiling there is raised with two skylights. I also am worried that moving the couch would close off the space/not sure how it would look when entering from the direction of kitchen, but it might be worth rearranging to see how it would look.

I definitely agree on new ceiling fixtures in both rooms and adding more light to the living room.

Sofa and tv: agree with floating the sofa and facing toward the wall where the sofa is now. tv on current sofa wall.

Fireplace: nothing wrong with the fireplace. It is just more traditional. Your ideabooks are showing very light colors with 3 contemporary room and one modern. So, I think eventually you are going to be altering this fireplace. An impactful piece of art above it.

Paint: I'd paint all the walls a creamy white.

Furniture: new furniture should be lower and not so bulky feeling.

Dining table: In an ideal world, there would be no dining table in that area at all. It's a walkway. Once the sofa is moved, can you place the dining table in area sort of in back of where the recliners are now?

Sofa and TV - I'll have some rearranging to do! should I have a wrap around couch/ or the same sized couch with accent chairs?

Fireplace - the fireplace and the built it storage on both sides of it will need updating eventually if I move the TV. the fireplace was made originally to hide tv cables and a sub-woofer (which won't be needed in the future) on one side and firewood on the other.

Paint - I agree with repainting just wasn't sure where I should start with this room. Plus the paint from this wall extends above the sliding doors, top wall of the kitchen, then leads down to the basement, so we'll have a lot to repaint.

Furniture - I agree, the furniture we have just feels too bulky for the space

Dining table - we actually have a separate dining room which which just finished painting and I'll be redecorating soon. I can remove the table in the pictures - the previous owners had a table there so we just followed suit. We now have bar stools at the kitchen counter anyways and use that more often then the table. Should I entirely remove that light fixture in that area, or just replace it with something more simple?

A sofa. Not a sectional.

Now that you are removing the table, you can place the sofa as we discussed and then have a couple of chairs facing the fireplace. Just make sure they are not bulky.

I'd move the sofa into place and take it from there.

It is best to do measurements and create a floor plan, prior to purchasing furniture.

I'd replace the chandelier with a semi-flush mount fixture.

Here's a sample plan, is this what you mean in terms of placement of the furniture? After looking at it this way, the space behind the couch looks too large to be a walkway, but not large enough to place anything in it -->should it just be left alone?

Assuming everything is exactly to scale, I'd move the sofa toward the French door a little (or smaller sofa. Get a long console for the tv, but hang it oriented more toward the window.

Or, move sofa forward. Or combination of all of these. Put a chair on either side of tv.

Exactly right. You can add a real plant at that end of the sofa near the window. It should do well there and add a needed touch of something green and living.

Wanted to mention...,if you are okay to sit in chairs when watching tv, you can switch sofa to facing fireplace and place 2 chairs facing tv.
