Given the dimensions of the dining area, have you considered doing a square rug, that would basically fill most of the dining area? The way I see it, the oval may not be in the doorway to the kitchen, but it is still right in the walkway, and leaving that one strip of floor on the left is going to make the whole space feel crowded. A bound piece of wonderful textured or patterned carpeting would be great. I also wondered if you have considered building in an upholstered banquette on the long wall and the end wall closest to the kitchen? With no windows, you have nothing to get in the way on the wall space, and it would allow you to tuck the table over to the right a bit, perhaps helping or even eliminating the rug issue. With wonderful mirrors or art hung on the wall behind the banquette, perhaps sconces on dimmers on the wall for lighting options, and upholstered in a wonderful fabric, it could be something to consider.

I was thinking maybe something like a navy or lighter blue may work. I really am not a purple fan and have no purple in the rest of my house so I want to avoid that. We have 2 dogs that shed a lot so a darker shade of blue may not work well for us. I'll have to look through some inspirational photos with navy couches to see if I like the look anyway!

IMO pets and kids and carpet never work well and I find berber really bad for matting down , snagging on dog claws and in kids bedrooms I would never do carpet.I think a tight weave is a must and freize is that you might also want to look a commercial grade carpet made for high traffic areas .I would just want hardwood and area rugs .
