Anyway, as I wrote, I can not get any turface here. The keramzyt is probably a worse water absorbent than turface. It's less porous. I think it's something you call oildri. The material is used for insulation against cold too.

Hi Faye! Your rose is probably some left over root stock from a rose that was planted there and died. In your zone it's most likely to be Dr. Huey, a red, one bloom cycle per season rose. It's extremely hardy and vigorous which is why it has been used for grafting roses for many decades. Other varieties of roses that do not grow as strongly on their own roots will be grafted onto the roots of Dr. Huey so that they too will grow vigorously. If the grafted variety dies off the roots of DH will take over and grow. It can climb to great heights and get quite large if you let it. If you've ever seen old abandoned farms or houses with large red roses growing all over the place in the early summer that was probably the Doctor. I lot of people will tell you to get rid of it and get something else. But for a beginner it's probably a good rose to start with because it is very vigorous and easy to grow. The rose itself is quite a pretty deep red color. The problem is that it is so vigorous that it can sometimes take over the other variety of rose that has been grafted on it. So a lot of rose people hate the stuff. As for pruning, cut to the soil any canes that look black or dead. If some of the tips are brown snip them off and look at the center of the cane. If the inside (pith) is greenish white or creamy you're OK. If the inside looks brown cut a little further down. Keep doing this until you get to that white pith. Make your cuts just above (about a 1/4 inch) one of those red nodes on the sides of the cane. Those are called bud eyes and are where the new leaves and canes will come from. I'm not sure it will bloom for you this year. Sometimes these once bloomers will take a few years to get the roots established enough to give you blooms. But once they are established that one bloom is usually very large and lasts for several weeks. Oh, and check the spot you dug it out of. The good Dr. could be giving you some more shoots! Like I said, he's very strong!

I once moved an own-root Tausendschoen with a big taproot (at the end of June). I drastically cut back the canes before I moved it (maybe 12-18" high when they had been 5' high), and it was a month before it sprouted new foliage, but once it did it recovered okay. It's now in a much sunnier spot and covered in buds. It'll be blooming shortly. I lost nearly all of the feeder roots and tried to keep as much of the taproot as I could, but after I got down about 20" and it kept going I just had to slice through it and get on with it. Once I transplanted it I checked it for water as if it was a houseplant that needed daily checking to make sure the soil around it was moist. Every time it felt like it was drying out 1" below the surface I got out the watering can and gave it another soaking.

Hello Tina, your new mix should be fine for a couple of weeks I would think. Sorry I can't help you with regard to the fertilisers you mention as I am not familiar with those brands being from 'over the pond'! The same applies to how often you should water them as my climate is so different. However, even here I can water them at least every other day during the summer as it's surprising how much water they will use in a fast draining mix as others have pointed out. I fertilise once a week spring to autumn. As for trimming roots above the soil...I do this when I raise the caudex each spring, but mainly they are those thin feeder roots that will dry out anyway when exposed. I have also been known to trim those slightly thicker ones as well, say just under pencil thickness if they have been sprouting randomly from the really chunky ones. As long as there's plenty of feeder roots left below, you are fine. The roots/caudex/leaves will bleed clear irritant sap so beware.
